Birding 101 is coming to Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park! 🐦

Join Timucuan Parks Foundation for Birding 101: Birds Are Everywhere, a beginner-friendly morning designed to help you slow down, tune in and discover the birds already all around us.

📅 Saturday, September 12
⏰ 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
📍 Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park (500 Wonderwood Dr)
💲 $10 TPF Members | $20 Non-Members
🔞 Designed for adults ages 18+

We’ll learn how to use binoculars and a field guide, explore tools like the Merlin Bird ID app and BirdCast, and then head outside for a guided birding walk to put it all into practice.

Binoculars will be provided, and every participant will also be entered into a free raffle for a bird-themed prize!

No birding experience needed. Come curious — and leave seeing Jacksonville’s wild places a little differently!

Protecting Public Lands 🤝 Preserving Clean Water

We’re celebrating National Public Lands Day throughout the month of September with St. Johns Riverkeeper! The Protect Our Public Lands Passport challenges you to visit as many public lands as you can throughout the St. Johns River watershed.

📍 Our Land: There are 50+ parks, springs and public lands to stamp on your passport!

💧Our Water: Public Lands are vital to maintaining healthy waterways. Each park is connected to the same watershed!

Use your digital passport to check in to each park using geolocation or a photo, and earn prizes when you visit 5, 10 and 20 locations! Florida Springs Council, Timucuan Parks Foundation & Northside Pride are also giving out prizes for visiting locations in their own unique categories.

There’s something special about experiencing the outdoors after dark. 🌙🌲

Blue Star Families military families and friends recently joined Timucuan Parks Foundation and Ranger Stephen for an evening adventure at Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park.

The 1.5 to 2 mile ranger-guided walk wound through maritime forest, around the lake and out to the beach as daylight slowly faded into total darkness. Along the way, the group stopped to look, listen, and learn — spotting birds on the lake, a banana spider along the trail, and even a loggerhead sea turtle nest on the beach.

And the wildlife wasn’t done yet! Several barred owls called out during the evening, and one family even managed to snap a photo of one on their way out of the park. 🦉

The night wrapped up back at Parking Lot 8, where members of the Northeast Florida Astronomical Society (NEFAS) had telescopes ready for a look at the night sky. 🔭✨

Join Friends of Talbot Islands State Parks on September 26 for a full day celebrating the incredible natural and cultural resources of the Talbot Islands.

There’s something for the whole family — including guided hikes, birding and native plant walks, kayak rides, a kids fishing clinic, arts and crafts, wildlife and archaeology activities, local conservation exhibitors, live music, food, a silent auction and more!

Help us count pollinators this weekend! 🦋🐝

Timucuan Parks Foundation is teaming up with our friends from the Duval County Extension Master Gardener program for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census at Castaway Island Preserve — and you have two chances to join us!

Meet in front of the education building

📅 Friday, August 21 | 4–5:30 p.m.
📅 Saturday, August 22 | 9–10:30 a.m.

Master Gardener Kirk Kuhn will be there to show you what to look for and how to participate. Come for one day or join us for both — no pollinator-counting experience required!

If you can, bring a printed pollinator count sheet (linked below)... if not, no worries — we’ll also have extras available. Please wear closed-toed shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring a full reusable water bottle.

It’s a fun, hands-on way to spend a little time outside while contributing to a larger effort to better understand the pollinators that help our ecosystems thrive. We look forward to seeing you there! 🌼

Not exactly our favorite holiday… but an important one! 🦟

August 20 marks World Mosquito Day, commemorating the discovery that mosquitoes transmit malaria. While that’s more of a global concern, here in Northeast Florida, mosquitoes are just… a part of life in the wild.

These tiny buzzers play a role in ecosystems (yes, even mosquitoes have a purpose), but they can definitely test our love for the outdoors.

🧴 Heading out to hike, paddle, or explore? Don’t forget your repellent, wear long sleeves when you can, and avoid peak mosquito hours (dawn and dusk) when possible.

💡 Pro tip: stick to breezy trails and open areas to keep the bites at bay.

The wild is worth it—bugs and all. 🦟
