Spring is beginning to bloom at the Abraham Byrd Homeplace on County Road 442. The daffodils are bright, the trees are waking up, and the historic grounds are coming back to life after the winter months. It’s one of our favorite times of year at this special place.

With spring arriving, we’re also looking forward to the Jackson Area Garden Tour on Saturday, May 16, which will be here before you know it.

Legacy Preservation Enterprise hopes to see many of you during the tour, co-sponsored with the Cape Girardeau County Historical Society and Juneberry Plant Shop / Cassi Bock Landscaping. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the season and enjoy some of the beautiful historic gardens in our community.

When we first began working on the Frizel-Welling House, one of the first priorities was simply stabilizing the structure. As John Ford likes to say, the early work was largely about “keeping the house from falling over.”

Nearly 200 years of weather had taken their toll. Some windows were crumbling, and parts of the original clapboard siding were badly worn.

Today, the restoration continues. Nels Bergmark has been carefully replacing siding where needed, while Marie Taylor of True North Preservation has been working alongside him to restore the historic windows.

Step by step, board by board, this remarkable Jackson landmark is being brought back to life.
