Bike Walk Tompkins

Bike Walk Tompkins Bike Walk Tompkins (BWT) grew out of the organizing group for Streets Alive! Ithaca and provides a central push for active transportation (i.e.

Join the movement to make Ithaca and Tompkins County a community where walking, biking and rolling are safe and convenient for people of all ages and abilities. biking and walking) in Tompkins County, through outreach & education, equipment & services. We work collaboratively with other people and organizations to change the culture and infrastructure in Ithaca and Tompkins County so that more peo

ple can embrace active transportation in their everyday lives. By making active transportation more prevalent and reducing the use of personal automobiles for short trips, our community will reap the multiple health, environmental, economic and social benefits associated with strong active transportation networks. In 2019, we unveiled our action plan for Ithaca and Tompkins County, the Bicycling for Everyone Plan (https://everyone.bikewalktompkins.org). Bike Walk Tompkins was formally organized in May 2014 and is currently a program of the Center for Community Transportation, a local non-profit with the mission of enhancing community access to transportation while reducing the negative environmental and economic impacts of car use. BWT has been generously funded in part by the Park Foundation.

On the third Wednesday of May, at 7 PM local around the world, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent protest of the carnage taking place on the streets.
Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclists Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus mirror on an empty road.
The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph for no longer than an hour, and remain silent during the ride.
The ride hopes to raise cycling awareness during bike safety month to motorists, police, traffic engineers, insurance companies, and city officials. The ride is also a chance to mourn, in funeral procession style, those who have already been killed.
The ride requests to wear white. Helmets suggested and available. There are no fees charged anyone to participate. We will meet in front of the shop for this ride.

Last Friday, Bike to Wherever Day brought folks out across Tompkins County to celebrate biking as a joyful way to get around. It was incredible to chat with so many people rolling through their day by bike.

A huge thank you to all of our pit stop partners, hosts, and riders who made the day possible. You helped show what a more connected, bike-friendly community can look like.
