The Mu Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. began on the campus of Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, with two young Theology students named Harry Blake and Charles Hubbard. Even though they attended Bishop College, they were initiated into the folds of Omega through the hist

oric Theta Chapter (“Mother Theta”) at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas.

Mother Theta Chapter was chartered in 1922 as the first Chapter west of the Mississippi River. Therefore, Mu Gamma Chapter’s history began with the birth of Brother Blake and Brother Hubbard through the historic Mother Theta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The two neophytes along with Brother Willie “Bill” Lewis, who became the Chapter’s first sponsor, applied for a charter. Brother Blake became the Chapter’s first Basileus and Brother Hubbard became the first Keeper of Records and Seals. The neophytes shared the responsibilities of Dean of Pledges. From April 12, 1958 to November 22, 1986, there were a total of One Hundred Thirty-Seven (137) men initiated into the folds of Omega through the Mu Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

Throughout the years of its existence, Mu Gamma Chapter played a big part in a lot of America’s history along with the history of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The Sixties introduced many profound changes to American society; the Vietnam War, the killing of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, boycotts at food counters, Afros, Civil Rights and the Black Panthers to name a few. In the early years of the 1960's, Bishop College, home of Mu Gamma Chapter, moved from Marshall, Texas to Dallas, Texas. On December 8, 1962 Brother Alexander Okogo became the first brother of Nigerian descent to be initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., through Mu Gamma Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

The 1970’s ushered in the Disco era, the Black Light became a party favorite and the common saying was “Do Your Own Thing”. The popular movies included Shaft, Cornbread, Earl and Me, Super Fly and Ladies Sing the Blues. The music of the day was For the Love of Money, Brick House, and Why Must I Chase the Cat.

On December 4, 1970, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. received another first through Mu Gamma Chapter. Brother Carlton Russell became the first “Little Person” to enter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s fold through Mu Gamma Chapter.

The 1980’s circulated rumors of despair about the closing of Bishop College, and ironically the first line of this decade was titled; Four Shadows of Death. On November 22, 1986, three young men made the last “Death March” at Bishop College before the doors of the College were closed permanently. The real estate and buildings that were once occupied by Bishop College was subsequently purchased by another HBCU, Paul Quinn College, located in Waco, Texas. Naturally, with the relocation of Paul Quinn College from Waco, Texas to Dallas, Texas, Zeta Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. relocated to the former campus occupied by Mu Gamma Chapter.

On Saturday, September 17, 2016, approximately thirty years after the closing of Bishop College, a group of Omega men initiated at Mu Gamma Chapter met at the home of Brother Mitchell King in Lancaster, Texas to discuss a strategy for the reactivation of Mu Gamma Chapter. The Mu Gamma Brothers present were Bro. Levi Williams, Bro. Mitchell King, Bro. John Clay, Bro. Don Juan Nelson, Bro. Nathaniel Eubanks, Bro. Harold Jones, Bro. Gregory Williams, Esq., Bro. Andrew Jackson, Esq. Gregory Williams, Jr.

Today we honor the life, legacy, and Omega spirit of Jesse Jackson — a drum major for justice, a fearless advocate for equality, and a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc..
As a member of Omega Psi Phi, Rev. Jackson exemplified the Cardinal Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. His life’s work reflected the very heartbeat of Omega — standing boldly in the gap for our communities, challenging injustice, and creating pathways where doors had been closed.
Through the Civil Rights Movement and beyond, he carried the mantle of leadership with conviction, faith, and unwavering courage. His voice echoed not only in pulpits and protest lines, but in the halls of power — always advocating for those whose voices were unheard.
To the men of Omega, he represents what it means to live our principles out loud. His legacy reminds us that Omega is not just letters we wear — it is a lifelong commitment to service, sacrifice, and uplift.
We salute our distinguished Brother.
We honor his impact.
And we recommit ourselves to the work.
Friendship is Essential to the Soul.
