Good news for the Muskegon River watershed!
Following the recent highwater events of the last few weeks, more and more Michigan communities are beginning the process of removing antiquated dams. Many of these outdated structures have not served a single utilitarian purpose in over a century, but now endanger the rivers and their surrounding communities, especially those residents that live downstream.

"The Muskegon River Watershed Assembly (MRWA) announced that an agreement has been reached with the property owner to move forward with the removal of Nartron Dam in Reed City. Demolition of the dam is currently estimated around 2029-2030."

As if the natural disasters weren't enough..

Steelhead egg collection was scheduled to begin today, Tuesday, April 14, at the Little Manistee River Weir in Stronach, Michigan. However, electrical damage during overnight storms caused a power failure at the weir facility, resulting in the loss of some of the fish being held for egg collection.

Like all watersheds in Northern Michigan, the Little Manistee River has swollen far over its banks, flooding all lowlands, tributaries and even some roads along its corridor, from the headwaters to the mouth.
After a week of heavy rain and spring runoff, levels are still rising as of 6pm. Another system of heavy rainfall is expected tonight and even more is predicted in the next few days. Flash flood warnings are in effect through Wednesday and should be taken seriously. Extra care should be taken if traveling over stream crossings. Dams are at risk of breech or failure throughout Northern Michigan and the Luther Dam is certainly no exception.
Follow the link below for updated water level data. Keep safe and take extra caution on the roads.
