Above the ridgelines, the lesson is the same as on the ground.

Read the terrain. Respect the weather. Plan ahead.

Recently, SMAT students headed to the Appalachian Mountains for a week of specialized mountain flying training.

Different terrain. Different challenges. Different decisions to make before every leg.

Mountain flying demands a different level of awareness, of the wind, the wx, the changing conditions.

This is where students learn to apply it in real conditions.

Some lessons are best learned with a view like this.

Fast. Affordable. Good.

Most aircraft owners will tell you that you can usually pick two.

Craig disagrees.

As the owner of a Pitts Special aerobatic aircraft, trust isn’t optional. Aerobatic flying places unique demands on an airplane, and when Craig takes to the sky, he wants complete confidence in the maintenance behind every flight.

After bringing his aircraft to SMAT Aviation, he found something rare:

A team with the expertise, tools, and capability of a much larger shop, without the overhead and unnecessary expense.

In Craig’s words:

“SMAT has figured out a way to do all three.”

We’re grateful for the trust of aircraft owners like Craig and proud to serve the West Michigan aviation community.

A quiet moment on the ramp.

Questions asked.
Experience shared.
Another future missionary aviator learning from someone who’s spent years walking the path ahead of him.

This is part of the rhythm at SMAT.
Not just training students how to fly, but helping prepare them for where God may someday send them.

We’re still thinking about the Kodiak visit from a couple weeks ago.

For many in mission aviation, aircraft like this represent far more than transportation. They’re tools used to reach isolated communities, support medical care, and carry the gospel to places that are difficult to access any other way.

Getting to watch students learn about the aircraft, fly in it, and experience it up close was something special.

And yes… the 45-degree banks were definitely a highlight. ✈️

If you missed the full video from last week, you don’t have to scroll very far to find it.

Aircraft like the Kodiak have become a trusted tool in mission aviation, reaching places where roads don’t go and access is limited.

Last week, SMAT students had the opportunity to experience it firsthand through our partnership with Mission Aviation Fellowship.

They were briefed on the aircraft, learned its systems, and even took flight, experiencing the kind of flying required in remote environments.

But one of the most meaningful moments happened before takeoff.

A pilot paused in the cockpit to pray.

It was a simple reminder that while the aircraft is an incredible tool, it’s ultimately used for something far greater. Mission Aviation Fellowship

Last week, students at SMAT got a close look at a Kodiak aircraft through our partnership with Mission Aviation Fellowship.

For many in mission aviation, this aircraft represents something special, a tool trusted to reach places few others can.

A plane that carries Bibles, missionaries and supplies to some of the hardest to reach people on Earth.

One student summed up the moment perfectly:

“This is the stuff of legends.”

This is just a preview.

Aviation is built on details.

Every measurement matters.
Every question matters.

This is how the next generation learns the craft.

A few moments from Zach’s story.

Some are about faith.
Some about growth.
Some are just the kind of conversations that happen along the way.

Together, they give a glimpse into life at SMAT and the people being shaped here.

Two frames. One focus.

In one moment, it’s hands on the details.
In the next, it’s seeing how everything fits together.

At SMAT, students are learning the craft from both angles. Precision in the small things and understanding of the whole system.

This is what hands-on aviation training looks like.

A sincere thank you to our friends at Kent Career Tech Center

Over the years, we’ve been grateful for the strong relationship between KCTC aviation and SMAT. From students who come to us with a solid foundation, to the recent generosity of aircraft and training equipment, this partnership continues to open new opportunities for our program.

These resources will directly support our instructors and students, helping us train the next generation of aviation mechanics with excellence.

We’re thankful for the partnership, the shared vision, and the continued investment in aviation training.
