Auboni Essence is adaptable and agile but above all, Auboni is authentic. Auboni is the difference between writing about sadness and having the scars that show she lived through it. She’s the difference between pondering joy and her cheeks being sore from smiling. From performing in quaint, cozy rooms to dazzling stages, every platform turns into Polaris because she’s always headed north and the mic is forever warm.

Getting her start at TPOM, one of the premier open mics in Indianapolis, she quickly transitioned from attendee into a key organizer, incubating some of the best writers of Indianapolis for the last decade. During that same tenure, she has served as a guest poetry lecturer at IU, been named an Indy Art and Soul Featured Artist, and become nationally renowned as one of the top 10 American slam poets at the Southern Fried Poetry Slam.

They love music. You can catch Auboni out dancing until their feet get weary, singing until their voice is hoarse or wringing their hands stained with ink from the last writing session. They never have to find the right thing to say because the truth doesn’t care who tells it.

Born and raised on the eastside of Naptown, Tylyn K. Johnson (they/he) is a floating writer reflecting a complex love through the framed lenses of Black Q***r artistry. Their language has appeared in numerous spaces, including Lolwe, just femme and dandy, Door’s Always Open Journal, and Dogwood Alchemy, with more work forthcoming. A lover of all creativities, he’s recently been dipping his quill into the visual arts.

Daniel A Martin is excited to work with Indy Shakes for the production of King Lear. It’s always a wonderful experience exploring a play you're performing in for the first time. The freedom to explore really wakes up your creativity and allows you to play. Daniel has portrayed many characters in many theaters over the years such as Sylvester in Detroit 67 (Naptown African American Theatre) Costard in Loves Labour Lost (Indianapolis Shakespeare Company) Ezekiel V in Magnolia Ballet (Phoenix Theatre) Reggie in Skeleton Crew (Summit Theatre) Dr King in Mountaintop (Indianapolis Black Theatre Company)

New story, same commitment to the work.

We respect the commitment.

Drum roll please...

Ryan is thrilled to be making his Taggart Memorial Amphitheatre debut! Having produced (or co-produced) all of the previous 5 productions Indy Shakes has done here, he is super excited to finally have the chance to perform in the amazing venue. In addition to having performed in 8 Indy Shakes shows and directing 2, Ryan is the executive artistic director for the company. Please donate to Indy Shakes to help us celebrate our 20th season! Ryan is a graduate of Ohio University and Juilliard

When the artistic director steps into Lear, the energy shifts.

20 years of Indy Shakes deserves more than applause.

$20 helps keep the stage alive, the stories going, and the park full of people who showed up for something real.

Simple math. Big impact.
