The IMPD North District invites everyone in our community to come out and celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

National Night Out is a coast-to-coast event focused on making our streets safer. Itโ€™s about boosting neighborhood spirit and sending a clear message: our community is organized, looking out for one another, and working together the right way to prevent crime.

What to Expect
In years past, Indy neighborhoods have hosted some fantastic gatherings. Many of these events get visits from IMPD officers, the Marion County Sheriffโ€™s Department, the Fire Department, and representatives from the Mayorโ€™s Office and other city agencies. Itโ€™s a great chance to talk one-on-one with the people serving our city.

How to Participate
On the evening of Tuesday, August 4, weโ€™re asking neighbors across Indianapolis to head outside and spend time with family, friends, and local officials.
While the tradition of "leaving the porch light on" is still a big part of the night, there are plenty of other ways to join in:
Host a backyard cookout or a block party.
Organize an ice cream social.
Plan a neighborhood bike ride or walk.
Simply gather on the front lawn to chat with neighbors.

For our Crime Watch and community groups, this is the best time of year to reach out and get more people involved. At IMPD, we are committed to making National Night Out a success, helping us all stand together for a safer, more connected Indianapolis.

Please fill out the attached registration form and send it back to us no later than Friday, July 24, 2026

Neighbor Power Indy

04/30/2026

Hello again, neighbors! Weโ€™re starting the week with some gray skies and a bit of a drizzle, but with temperatures staying in the mid-60s, itโ€™s hard to complain too much. We are officially on the doorstep of May, and you can already feel that "Month of May" energy building across the city. Whether youโ€™re heading to the ballpark to see the Indians play at Victory Field or grabbing your packet for the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon this weekend, itโ€™s a busy time for our community.

As we move into this final stretch of April, many of our families are heading out for long weekends or preparing for race-related travel. It can get a little quiet on our blocks, which is exactly why we need to talk about Residential Burglary. When a home sits empty for a few days, it can unfortunately become a target if it looks unattended.

Under Indiana Code ยง 35-43-2-1, burglary is defined as knowingly or intentionally breaking and entering a building or structure with the intent to commit a felony or theft inside.

This is generally a Level 5 felony. However, the law provides a significant enhancement if the structure is a "dwellingโ€ meaning a personโ€™s home. In those cases, the offense is elevated to a Level 4 felony. Indiana law recognizes the sanctity of your home, and we want to help you make sure your โ€œpersonal castle" stays secure while youโ€™re away.

Mr. Gโ€™s Safety Tips

The "Lived-In" Look: Use smart plugs or traditional timers to cycle your interior lights on and off. A house that stays completely dark for several nights in a row is a clear signal that nobody is home. Keeping the porch light on at night and off during the day is another simple way to show activity.
Digital Silence: Itโ€™s tempting to share those vacation photos in real-time, but itโ€™s much safer to wait until you are back home. Posting about your trip while youโ€™re still away essentially telling the world that your home is currently unattended and vulnerable.
Stop the Paper Trail: Nothing says "vacant" like a stuffed mailbox or a stack of packages sitting on the porch. Place a temporary hold on your mail and any recurring delivery services before you leave. It only takes a few minutes and removes a major visual cue for potential intruders.
Secure the Perimeter: Before you head out, do a quick walk-around to ensure all access points are locked, including detached garages and sheds. Don't leave ladders or tools outside that could be used to reach a second-story windowโ€”which should also be checked and locked.

Mr. Gโ€™s Final Notes If youโ€™re heading out of town, consider letting a trusted neighbor or friend know so they can keep an extra eye on things. We Hoosiers have a long history of looking out for the folks next door. Travel safe, enjoy the spring festivities, and letโ€™s keep our neighborhood a hard target.

Stay safe, Indy!
