🍄 The rain is here, and so are the mushrooms. 💦

After a long, dry stretch, Northwest Arkansas finally got a good soaking. That means fall mushroom season is waking up across the Ozarks. Our woods are about to fill with chanterelles, oysters, puffballs, shelf fungi, and plenty of strange little treasures you’ve never noticed before.

Want to learn what you’re looking at? Join us for Fall Fun with Fungi at our Lake Fayetteville Campus.

📅 Saturday, October 24
🕥 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM
📍 Lake Fayetteville Campus, Springdale

Mushroom expert Jay will lead the day. You’ll learn to identify our local fungi, understand the roles they play in the forest, and head out on the trail to find them while conditions are just right. Curious beginners and seasoned foragers are both welcome.

🪕 And there’s more good news: this rain sets us up for perfect weather and a burn-ban-lifted Bear Hollow Hootenanny this weekend, October 16 to 18, at our Main Campus in Huntsville! Come for the music, the food, and a weekend in the woods. Stop by our table to learn more about Fall Fun with Fungi.

Tickets for both events are at the link in our bio. 🌧️🍂

From adventuring in Bear Hollow to discussing the interplay of nature and art at Crystal Bridges, it was quite a week! We welcomed Berryville students overnight and brought our new Operations Coordinator, Heran Lemma, into her first residential camp. She fits right in! We are all thrilled to have her. Olivia said it best: Hip hip Heran!! 🎉

And to put it all in perspective... this all used to be underwater?! Yes, indeed. The first picture shows brachiopod fossils our students found at Bear Hollow. They date back roughly 330 million years, to when a shallow tropical sea covered the Ozarks. 🐚🌊

September at ONSC 🍂

1. Our first group of the fall season. We loved having you, Connect Education Co-op!
2. Cornelia’s big shed
3. She turned such a dusty purple right before
4. Alex and Dr. Perry met to talk about bringing Rogers Public Schools programs back to ONSC
5. So much tree work
6. Our new compost system
7. A beautiful mural of some of the creatures and features round these parts. It’s all done now, but you’ll have to come to the Hootenanny to see it!

Not pictured: the hundreds of students we’ve connected with so far this month, from STEAM field trips at Crystal Bridges to the 90+ EAST kiddos from Springdale Public Schools JO Kelly Middle School and Helen Tyson Middle School who immersed themselves on our trails yesterday. It’s been a wild, full month, and we’re so grateful to the partners, parents, and kids who’ve been part of it. 💚

Studying nonprofit management, business, communications, or something related? Come see what fundraising and event production really look like at a working nonprofit.

ONSC is hiring a Spring Development & Events Intern! You'll work directly with our CEO on donor communications, grant support, and event logistics — think weekend workshops, a community happy hour, and planning for our fall event season. A real behind-the-scenes seat at how a small nonprofit raises money and builds relationships.

Apply before October 16th - link in comments!
