WFR Norway, class days 4 & 5! The Sidequest squad successfully made it back to Notodden for the remainder of class after being released into the Norwegian countryside. Class day 4 consisted of an afternoon/evening session, where the squad went into depth on patient assessment and the ABCDEs, and practiced more splinting. We got to end the day with a sauna session and a swim in the fjord!

Day 5 was a full day of class, where we built more shelter in preparation for our final assessments, and learned about various different medical and trauma scenarios. We learned how to help patients in different environments, and Dr. Nic showed us how to built medical kits for our future endeavors.

Travel days 3 - 5! The Sidequest squad made it to Bergen. We of course found ourselves on sidequests within the sidequest, camping, jumping in more waterfalls, fishing (from a boat this time!), and climbing on islands. We also got to visit some Norwegian firefighters, complete with a station tour and a swag swap! Naturally, we also found our way onto a construction site (and did a 37 point turn, thanks Google Maps, see photo). The strike mission back to Notodden from Bergen was a long day, but we eventually made it back in time for the rest of class, watching a gorgeous sunset on the way home.

Travel days! While Dr. Nic had to return to work for the week, the Sidequest squad was let loose into the Norwegian countryside. We camped, AirBnB'd, and met some epic people along the way (while still studying, don't worry). With a destination of Bergen in mind, we meandered our way from south to north over the course of a few days, while fishing, sightseeing, and jumping in waterfalls. These photos cover the first 2 - 3 days of travel for the Sidequest Squad - come see days 3 - 5 tomorrow!:)

WFR Day 3! On the final day of weekend 1, the Sidequest team learned about using ultrasound, making litters out of objects you'd have with you camping, and did a full realistic mock rescue complete with splinting, patient assessment, extrication, and transport. The team also went over another few types of medical scenarios you may encounter while in the wilderness.

An epic breakfast was enjoyed thanks to our awesome host, Su-Strand Farm, and we got to eat lunch and dinner with a gorgeous view of the town of Notodden.

A continued thank you to the best instructor ever, Dr. Nic, and we hugely look forward to weekend 2! Stay tuned for a recap of the adventures we went on during the few days off we had, as well as what we'll be doing during Weekend 2!

ISLA WFR Day 2! Today, our team dove into remote wound care, dislocations, creating shelters, and suturing. With the beautiful Norwegian countryside as a backdrop for the course, our team is unbelievably stoked to continue learning more. From realistic wounds (it's makeup, don't worry) in practicals to sitting at the table practicing sutures in the dark, the ISLA Sidequest team is gaining more and more knowledge as each hour of this course passes.

Day 2 included a delicious dinner the team made, and we finished the night off with an equipment breakdown and a good night's rest for the squad.

We again thank our incredible instructor Leland Surf Expeditions for the hospitality, the sharing of knowledge, and your willingness to let us get super hands on with your equipment!

The ISLA Sidequest reveal! 5 ISLA members have traveled to Notodden, Norway to obtain their WFR certifications over these next two weeks.

Working with Surf Expeditions and Similar Shores Foundation, our 5 ISLA team members will, after earning their WFR certs, be more prepared to assist in any medical scenarios that arise during future operations. Although our team members are already medically trained, the WFR certification provides additional knowledge that is crucial for operating in more remote terrain, which most ISLA operations take place in.

On Day 1, our team was introduced to the WFR course, our amazing instructor, Dr. Nic Frazier, and we began lectures and mock practicals. Stay tuned as we share more of what the team does throughout their course! 🛟 🌊
