Trench Safety is No Joke. It's a Matter of Life and Death.

June is Trench Safety Month, a time to raise awareness in the industry and among our members about one of the most dangerous activities in construction. Trench cave-ins remain a leading cause of fatalities in our industry.

In any situation, a trench 5 feet deep or greater must be protected using sloping, shoring, or shielding to prevent cave-ins. Just one cubic yard of soil can weigh up to 3,000 pounds, enough to crush bones, damage vital organs, and cause fatal injuries in seconds.

Before you enter a trench, make sure the proper protective systems are in place. No job is worth the risk.

Congratulations to LiUNA Laborers' Local 423 member Dillon for completing his last apprenticeship class at OLTC👏

Dillon completed his apprenticeship with Kokosing, doing heavy highway work in central Ohio. Keep up the great work, Dillon!💪

We love to hear when apprentices can reflect positively on their training and time spent at OLTC. The more you train, the more you can do on and off the jobsite!

🌟 BIG NEWS! 🌟

We are excited to welcome TWO new Maintenance Technicians to our team — please help us congratulate 👏 Anthony Gilmore and Josh Grenell!

🔧 Anthony brings an incredible variety of experience including:
🚜 Equipment operation & heavy machinery
⚙️ Mechanical & fleet maintenance
💡 Electrical work
🚰 Plumbing, water & air systems
🏢 Building systems & facility equipment
…and so much more!

🚌 Josh currently serves as the bus mechanic for Danville Local Schools and previously worked in maintenance for East Knox Local Schools. On top of that, he proudly serves the community as a 🚒 firefighter for East Knox!

🎉 Both Anthony and Josh will be joining us in early June, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them on board!

Preparing for upcoming work with our Gunite class💪

This season, Instructor Scott brought back the Gunite class at the request of one of our Locals. The Gunite class is not regularly scheduled at OLTC, as it is less common than it once was, but Gunite is still extremely effective for waterproofing, soundproofing, and fortifiying structures.

Students in the class practiced setup, gunman, and nozzleman responsibilities, gunning techniques, thickness control, and finishing methods. Check them out in action!

Ginny works behind the scenes to prepare instructional materials for classes at OLTC and at the local union halls and contractor locations. Ginny also provides certification cards for members upon successful completion of training courses.

Andddd that’s a wrap on the 2025–2026 training season! 👏🎉

We are so proud of and grateful for all the members who came out to train with us this season to sharpen their skills, earn certifications, and advance their careers. We loved every moment of it!

A huge thank you also goes out to our incredible instructors and support staff who keep OLTC running strong and make every class a success. Your time, effort, and dedication do not go unnoticed!

Instructor Zach's A-2 Introduction to Transits classes built on the skills they learned in A-1 to set up transits, turn angles, and extend true lines using trigonometry tables and stake marking.

These are valuable skills for future site leaders 👊 Great work, class!
