Transportation– how we get where we need to go – should not be a barrier to accessing jobs, education, healthcare, shopping, or anything else we need in our lives. People should be able to reach such opportunities safely and with dignity by walking, rolling, biking, and riding transit.

METRO is one week away from voting on their 2027 budget - which currently still includes $40M for asphalt. Public transit dollars should go towards public transit riders. If you agree then tell the METRO board on Wednesday September 30 at 9AM.

This spring, LINK Houston surveyed over 500 Houstonians to explore their understanding of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP), the effects of construction on their transit trips, and gaps in how disruptions are communicated.

TxDOT’s Construction is slated to last until 2042, cost $13 billion, and will widen and realign sections of I-45 and five other Houston freeways.

The project has already displaced families, destroyed housing, and caused business closures in the corridor.

As of September 2026, over 12 METRO routes are running on detours because of TxDOT’s construction impacting over 15,000 daily transit trips. Throughout the duration of construction, the project will impact 65 METRO bus and rail routes – over half of METRO’s network - serving almost 200,000 daily transit trips.

Budget season is here and the METRO board is currently drafting their Fiscal Year 2027 budget for approval later this month.

Since 2017, LINK Houston has surveyed riders to learn what they value. Every year, frequency and reliability are the top priorities of riders. Riders want to spend less time waiting for the bus or train & want to trust that their trips will be predictable and consistent.

METRO's budget should include investments in more buses to replace aging vehicles and also grow their fleet. They should also spend capital dollars on street improvements like the BOOST program which reduce the cost of service by making it easier for buses to keep moving.

The currently proposed $40 million being diverted to road repaving could easily fill this gap.

Budget season gives the public a chance to see the values of the institutions in charge. For ten years now LINK Houston has heard from riders who value frequent and reliable service above all. Those values should be reflected in METRO’s FY 2027 budget and we urge METRO to make those considerations. METRO is a public transit agency not a road repair contractor.

It’s National Intern Day and we’re happy to celebrate Nic and Kaylee! They quickly embraced the transit life commuting from Rice daily, taking the bus on trips around town, delivering public comments to the METRO board, and even joining a 12 hour transit crawl on the last day of METRO’s enhanced FIFA service. We’re so happy with all of your work this summer and look forward to seeing what y’all do next! Welcome to the CAN!
