more than a century. From blossom time to the turning of the leaves, the more 14,000 acres of commercial pear, apple, cherry, and peach orchards provide miles of scenic beauty. Fruit grown here is of such exceptional quality that the county leads the world in Anjou pear production, and 50% of the nation’s winter pear crop comes from Hood River. The local “Fruit Loop” is a favorite with visitors and locals alike. Livability and quality of life are priorities in Hood River County. Join us on the banks of the Columbia River this Labor Day for an exhilarating open-water swim.

For 81 years, swimmers have boarded the famous Sternwheeler paddleboat on the south shore of the Columbia River, at the dock in Cascade Locks, and are ferried to the Washington side of the river. When signaled, swimmers jump off the Sternwheeler into the Columbia and swim an approximately 1.1-mile stretch across to Cascade Locks. To help them find their way, a special swim lane lined with volunteers in sailboats, kayaks, and paddle boards are there to guide, encourage, and protect swimmers as they cross the channel.

We have made the difficult decision to cancel this month's First Friday due to air quality concerns caused by wildfire smoke.

The health and safety of our community is our top priority. While we always look forward to bringing everyone together, current smoke conditions make it the right decision to cancel this month's event.

If you feel comfortable getting out, we encourage you to continue supporting our local businesses. Hood River's shops, restaurants, breweries, wineries, and tasting rooms remain open and would love to welcome you. Whether it's dinner with friends, a stop for coffee, or a little local shopping, every visit makes a difference.

Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and continued support of our community. We look forward to gathering together again when conditions improve.

Hood River is still open to explore, but with the Grasshopper Fire active in Mt. Hood National Forest, it’s more important than ever to recreate responsibly.

If you’re visiting:
• Check fire, road, and air quality updates before you go.
• Respect all closures and fire restrictions.
• Keep drones grounded—they can halt firefighting aircraft.
• Give firefighters and emergency crews the space they need.
• Choose alternative recreation areas away from the fire.
• If your plans include affected areas like Mt. Hood Meadows or Cooper Spur, consider postponing or rescheduling.
• Help prevent new fires by following all fire safety guidelines.

This year we're excited to introduce the Tails on Trails Fun Run, where you and your four-legged friend can walk or run through scenic forested trails and open alpine meadows on majestic Mt. Hood.

Take in breathtaking views, waterfalls, and wildflowers before celebrating at the finish line with pup treats, a cheerful welcome committee, and a fun community atmosphere. Best of all, 100% of Fun Run registration proceeds support Hood River Adopt A Dog and the incredible work they do finding loving homes for dogs in our community.
