Shady Oaks Camp is a not for profit, 501c3 summer camp for people with disabilities, opened in 1947 by The Parents Association for Cerebral Palsy Children.

In the 1940’s there were little or no services available for people with disabilities. Seeing this, a group of dedicated parents of children with Cerebral Palsy came together to form The Parents Association for Cerebral Palsy Children Inc. The Association purchased 30+ acres of land in Homer Township, Illinois in the hopes of building a summer camp which specifically served people with CP and similar disabilities. In 1947 this dream came to light with the opening of Shady Oaks Camp for Individuals with Cerebral Palsy. For the past 70 years, the dream of a few caring parents has survived through Shady Oaks. In recent years the group has grown to not only accept children with Cerebral Palsy but all disabilities. The Parents Association is a not for profit organization which is dedicated to the welfare of individuals with disabilities. It is a inter-racial, non-denominational, charitable organization chartered by the State of Illinois. The first priority of the Parents Association is the operation of Shady Oaks Camp. They have also been instrumental in securing two residential group homes, located on camp grounds, for individuals with disabilities. These homes are operated by Lutheran Social Services and are not connected with Shady Oaks Camp. The operation of Shady Oaks ranges from $400,000 to $450,000 per year, with most of the expenses incurred during the eight week camp period. This cost does not include improvements and maintenance to the buildings, electrical and plumbing, and septic fields. The cost of these repairs varies from year to year. Because the Association is a not for profit, private organization the money to run camp must be raised by the parents. Many fundraisers are conducted throughout the year to help bring in money. These fundraisers include raffles, dinner dance, tag days, Poker games and our annual SOB Motorcycle run. Beside fundraisers the parents receive cash donations from various supporting organizations. To be a member of the Parents Association, dues of $50.00 must be paid between September 1st and December 31st. After December 31st, dues are increased to $100.00. Dues must be paid in order to hold an office, serve on the Board of Directors, or to obtain camp time for your child. The cost of sending a child to camp depends on the number of weeks requested and the amount of fundraising done.

On Thursday, November 19th, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, we will be hosting our 3rd annual Pasta dinner at Tazza Italian Ristorante in Homer Glen. Tickets are $25.00 a piece and 100% of the proceeds go to support camp. A huge thank you to Rose from Tazza for once again donating the facility and food for the nights festivities. 🙂

A huge thank you to everybody who came out for our camp fall cleanup day. It was a beautiful sunny day and lots of work got done by our dedicated volunteers. Thank you to everyone who came out from Christ Community Church, Parkview Christian church, Lemont high school, Lockport high school and everyone else who came out to give us a helping hand. :) a big thank you to Jeff and Kim Mlyniec For all their hard work organizing the day's events. Special thanks to Bob Madoch and Mike Nowakowski and for being our chefs for the day and grilling up some yummy burgers and dogs. :)

We would like to send a huge thank you to Modern Woodmen Financial for not only volunteering at camp but also throwing one heck of a afterparty for our families! In the morning the Woodmen were able to scrape and stain 2 decks, w**d whack and mow, clean gutters and even dispose of a bunch of tree debris around our fire pit. :) After all their hard work, we then were able to have a fantastic picnic with delicious food provided by Joey's Red Hots and Alos Tacos. We even had some awesome music by the Wrought Iron Soul band! The whole day was courtesy of the modern Woodmen! It was a fantastic day all around!

There will be food food provided by Joey's Red hots and Alos Tacos, games and freebies all courtesy of The Modern Woodmen. If you have never been to Shady Oaks, here is your chance to see one of Homer Glens hidden gems. SOC will also be celebrating its 80th anniversary next summer! :)
