Green Lake Association Annual Meeting Date: Thursday, July 18th
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Location: Lucerne Inn
We look forward to seeing everyone at our annual meeting on Thursday, July 18th. We will start with a social hour at 6:00 PM to gather with friends, old and new. Light appetizers will be available, along with coffee, iced tea, and a cash bar.

Following the social hour, we will have a brief business meeting and then welcome our guest speaker, Caroline Murray, who will be discussing:

“Keeping Lakes Healthy and Resilient with LakeSmart”

Caroline will speak about the LakeSmart program, a key strategy in our lake protection efforts. Learn how shorefront homeowners can impact and improve the water quality of Green Lake by reducing stormwater runoff from their properties.

Caroline is the LakeSmart Coordinator for the non-profit organization Maine Lakes. She facilitates LakeSmart programs across the northern five counties by training volunteers, giving outreach presentations, and developing new educational materials. LakeSmart is an educational, non-regulatory, and voluntary program designed to help shorefront homeowners improve lake water quality by managing stormwater runoff.

Labor Day is coming September 4, 2023 and that can begin the yearly Lake drawdown. Lake is currently close to staff gage 6.8 and by October 15th should be at 4.0. Starting date could be later but no sooner.
This is a yearly event allowed by the current FERC license of Green Lake Water Power Company.
The rate of drawdown is variable and is governed by water taken by Green Lake National Fish Hatchery and Green Lake Water Power Company but GLWPCo stops at 4.0 or October 15th whichever comes first. This date allows spawning to take place and reduces risk of dewatering spawning ground.

Investigating the effects of climate change on Maine lakes

Scientists at Acadia National Park and researchers from the University of Maine Climate Change Institute have long collaborated to determine how the changing climate is affecting the water chemistry, physical properties, and ecological systems of park lakes. Bill Gawley and Rachel Fowler will highlight some of these projects and their findings, and how climate change can affect how we experience and enjoy Maine lakes.

Adult browntail moths are emerging from their cocoons in Bangor. White moths will collect around outside lights. Residents are encouraged to turn off outside lights between 9pm and 12am to prevent attracting them.

In the interest of public safety, streetlights will remain on. However. we are working on a comprehensive lighting plan to explore options related to automatic dimmers during BTM season.

For more information, visit www.bangormaine.gov/moth.
