Fund for a Better Waterfront

Fund for a Better Waterfront Along the Hudson River waterfront, the lack of public planning has allowed private interests to dominate the water's edge.

FBW has been guided by a single unifying vision since our founding: to secure an undeniably public waterfront park along NJ’s Hudson River – now and for generations to come. Many private enclaves with guard houses and gates have been built with backyards abutting the state-mandated Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. As a result, there is a built-in conflict between the public seeking to use the walk

way and the private owners who want their properties to be secure and safe. Fortunately, Fund for a Better Waterfront (FBW) has prevented that “privatization of the waterfront” from occurring in Hoboken. Over the years, FBW has fought many battles to preserve the opportunity to complete the proposed continuous, public waterfront park at the water’s edge. Today, Hoboken’s waterfront park is 85% built, and the opportunity to complete it from one end of town to the other is now close at hand.

On May 19, FBW attended the Waterfront Alliance's annual conference at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in lower Manhattan. This year’s conference was entitled Future-Proofing Our Waterfronts and addressed one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how to plan, design, and build resilient waterfronts in the face of accelerating climate impacts and shrinking political and financial support. For more on this event check out our June 4th newsletter on the FBW website under Newsletters or in your email inbox.

Tonight, the Hoboken Planning Board will consider the Stevens Institute application for another high-rise tower, replacing Davis Hall. The 13-story, 238,000 square foot building will have classrooms, research and study rooms plus 7 floors of on-campus housing. The building is designed based on the City's up-zoning of the campus in 2017.
