Language matters.

When bringing an animal into your family words like owner, pet, or it perpetuate the false narrative that animals are objects/items. They are individuals who we are becoming responsible for and our language impacts how we respond to them!

When we care about them as an individual it changes how we help them if they struggle to adapt to a situation.

Positive reinforcement
💭 What is it? Reinforcing behavior we want to see! That means instead of yelling or “punishing” unwanted behavior, you are ✨teaching✨ a replacement behavior

This is different from positive punishment which adds aversive or unpleasant response (from us) to them to decrease their behavior (I.e., yelling, hitting, shock, etc.)

Our furry loves are on this earth for a short time, don’t they deserve the love and respect in return they so freely give us?

“7yrs young, found running stray with a pack of chihuahuas…sounds like a cartoon premise but it’s real. She was the matriarch of the group clearly in charge and the most socialized. She’s a beautiful blue color and very sweet. She has an odd gate in her rear legs but at this stage in her life any surgical corrections are not advised. So she just gets to keep her wiggle waggle stride and you get a sweet, silly, kissy gal to spend quiet evening with at home.”

It’s Pet Obesity Awareness Day and as a dog mom to a young chihuahua who struggles with weight and luxating patellas, I know the struggle.

Here are our ✨top tips✨ for supporting overweight dogs:

1. Homemade/Natural treats 🎃🍎🍠
When I am making dinner or prepping fruits, I like to put some unseasoned fruits and veggies aside for my dogs. I also will bake or make a treat every once in a while. This ensures they are getting treats that not only are free of additives/fillers but that give them nutrients and are low calorie

2. Walk at their pace and distance 🏃🏽‍♀️
Sometimes this is easier said than done. Be sure to talk with your vet in case your pup has another condition that is making exercise/walks difficult for them. For our pup, we use joint supplements and stretches to help him be comfortable enough to stay active and we make sure to monitor what speed and length he is okay with (it changes)

3. Use non-walking activities such as swimming or obstacle courses! (If you have a small dog, a bathtub can be all you need!)

4. Always research your pets diet 👩‍💻
Many treats and foods use unnecessary fillers and additives. Research and try options to see what works best for your pup

5. Take a deep breath 💨 We all want to keep our little loves healthy. Weight struggles can fluctuate. Monitor, research, and be sure to see your vet regularly.
