We are thrilled to celebrate GDFCF Board Member Cynthia Barzuna, who has been named a Mangrove Breakthrough Champion.

Throughout her career—from helping expand marine protection in Costa Rica to leading global ocean initiatives at WRI—Cynthia has shown what visionary, collaborative leadership looks like. Her selection recognizes not only her commitment to mangroves, but to a future where healthy oceans and thriving communities go hand in hand.

Congratulations, Cynthia! We are lucky to learn from and work alongside you. 🌊🌿

Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊

These Pacific barracuda were photographed in the marine waters of Área de Conservación Guanacaste.

While ACG is often known for its forests and terrestrial biodiversity, it also protects 43,000 hectares of ocean habitat along Costa Rica’s north Pacific coast. These waters support an extraordinary diversity of marine life and are the focus of ongoing research by ACG and our BioMar team.

Today we’re celebrating the ocean and all the species—large and small—that call it home.

On International Day for Biological Diversity, we are celebrating a new discovery from Área de Conservación Guanacaste.

Congratulations to our very own taxonomist Isidro Chacón and his co-authors (including Dan and Winnie!) on the publication of a newly identified butterfly species: Colobura cryptica.

Collected and DNA barcoded in ACG by local parataxonomists and researchers, this discovery is a reminder that even in one of the world’s most studied tropical ecosystems, there is still so much left to discover.

Biodiversity matters — and so do the people dedicating their lives to understanding and protecting it.

🐸 Today is Endangered Species Day.

When people think of endangered species, they often think of large animals like jaguars or sea turtles. But many of the most vulnerable species are much smaller — and just as important to the ecosystems around them.

Amphibians (like the critically endangered Craugastor ranoides shown here) are among the most threatened groups of animals on Earth, highly sensitive to changes in climate, habitat, water quality, and disease. Their presence is often a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

In Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG), protecting biodiversity means protecting entire interconnected systems — from forests and rivers to the smallest and least visible forms of life.

Every species matters, whether widely known or rarely seen.
