A spectacular red moon is set to rise over Hawaiʻi Island Thursday evening, August 27 as a deep, near-total lunar eclipse darkens roughly 96% of the Moon.

The show will already be underway at moonrise around 6:35–6:45 PM HST, creating the chance to see a dramatic copper-red Moon rising over the eastern horizon. ✨

🌋 KĪLAUEA IS ERUPTING — EPISODE 54 IS UNDERWAY! 🌋

Kīlauea has come alive once again! Episode 54 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu summit eruption began at approximately 10:30 a.m. HST today, Tuesday, August 25, according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Lava fountaining is underway at the summit inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Kīlauea is currently at a WATCH alert level with an ORANGE aviation color code.

All eruptive activity remains confined to Halemaʻumaʻu and the summit caldera, but volcanic gas, vog, ash and Pele’s hair can potentially affect areas downwind.

🚨🌀⛈️ Hawaii County Civil Defense has issued a Flood Watch and monitors Tropical Storm Moke, passing south of the Big Island. Heavy rains (5 to 10 Tropical Storm Moke is passing south of the island, bringing heavy rain, potential flooding, and high winds.Advisories: A Flood Watch remains in effect for Hawaiʻi Island through Monday.

Open Shelters: Locations include Yano Hall (Captain Cook), Naalehu Elementary School, Robert Herkes Gym (Pahala), Keaau Armory, and Puueo Community Center (Wainaku).

Closures: Waipio Valley Access Road and select beach parks are closed; expect Hele-On bus adjustments and potential power outages.
