🌋 KĪLAUEA- Tutu Pele IS BREATHING HEAVY THIS MORNING! 🌫️

Thick Vog drifting across the ‘āina in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park this morning, October 29, 2026!

This footage from the USGS live camera captures a thick blanket of volcanic emissions moving across the crater, reminding us that Kīlauea is very much alive beneath the surface.

🌫️ WHAT IS VOG?

Vog (volcanic smog) forms when sulfur dioxide (SO₂) released by volcanic activity reacts with moisture, oxygen, and other substances in the atmosphere.

💨 Depending on wind direction, vog can travel far beyond the summit, affecting air quality in communities across Hawaiʻi Island.

⚠️ A REMINDER: Those with asthma, respiratory conditions, or sensitivities to poor air quality should monitor local conditions and limit exposure when necessary.

🌧️⚠️ BIG ISLAND WEATHER ALERT: MONSOON TROUGH HEADING TOWARD HAWAIʻI! 🌩️🌊

A potentially significant weather system is developing near the Hawaiian Islands, bringing the threat of heavy tropical rainfall, thunderstorms, and dangerous flash flooding to the Big Island.

📅 WHEN? October 25–29, 2026

⚡ WHAT’S HAPPENING?

A monsoon trough is a large area of low pressure that draws warm, moisture-rich tropical air toward Hawaiʻi. As that moisture moves over our islands and mountains, it can produce intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

🚨 WHAT BIG ISLAND RESIDENTS SHOULD KNOW:

🌧️ Heavy rainfall and localized flooding possible

⚡ Thunderstorms and intense downpours

🌊 Flash flooding in low-lying areas

🌳 Falling trees, debris, and possible power outages

🚧 Flooded roads and dangerous driving conditions

📍 Hilo, Puna, Hāmākua, Kona, and surrounding communities should stay weather-aware. Impacts will vary by location.

⚠️ Tuesday and Wednesday, October 27–28, are currently a key period to watch. Forecast timing and severity may change.

🏡 PREPARE NOW, NOT DURING THE STORM!

✔️ Secure tents, canopies, and outdoor belongings

✔️ Clear gutters and drainage areas

✔️ Charge phones and backup batteries

✔️ Prepare emergency supplies

🌊 AN ICONIC BIG ISLAND LANDMARK IS GONE

For years, Hōlei Sea Arch stood along the rugged coastline of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, near the end of Chain of Craters Road—a dramatic reminder of how lava, wind and waves continually shape Hawaiʻi Island.

On September 27, 2026, the natural sea arch collapsed into the Pacific. What remains is a dramatically different coastline, captured in these before-and-after photos.

Sea arches are temporary on a geologic timescale. The same relentless ocean that helped carve Hōlei eventually weakened the formation until it could no longer stand.

The County will direct you to the nearest sandbag location and provide pickup instructions. Sandbags are self-service, so bring a truck or vehicle with enough room to transport them.
