Hawaiian Electric’s customers are paying more for electricity because of higher fuel costs, and now Hawaiian Electric is asking the state Public Utilities Commission for a further increase. Although Hawaii’s climate allows us to use less electricity than elsewhere in the country, that good fortune is more than offset by having to pay the highest electricity rates in the nation — more than twice the national average.

Thanks for joining us for our monthly meeting on Wednesday. We are getting ready for Lobby Week in November and the upcoming Fall Conference in December. Volunteers also finished writing their postcards to remind voters of the upcoming Midterm Election.

Other happenings include the He Ala Pono Sustainability Fair taking place Nov. 7 in Hilo. We will share more information about this fair in the next couple of days.

The connection-before-context question this month was: What's your favorite climate action costume? We remembered that one year, Karina showed a picture during a staff call dressed as a globe. She shared that photo with us during the meeting.

Citizens' Climate Honolulu🏝🤙 Citizens' Climate Lobby volunteers wrote 50 postcards that will be mailed to Hawai’i voters to remind them of the upcoming election this Nov. 3rd.

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 26–28, 2026 — At a moment when many Americans feel divided and frustrated with politics, local volunteers with grassroots climate advocacy organization Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) are traveling to Washington, D.C., to show another path forward: respectful dialogue, civic engagement, and working across differences to advance climate and clean energy solutions.

As the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary this year, two volunteers from Hawaii will participate in the organization’s 2026 Summer Conference and Lobby Day, joining hundreds of citizen lobbyists from across the country to meet directly with members of Congress and their staff on Capitol Hill.

Our special guests are the people writing the testimony and working the halls to keep these bills alive. On January 21, CCL members participated in the 2026 Hawai’i State Legislature in Honolulu.

This day marked the start of the 33rd Legislature and it was an opportunity for members of the community to meet with legislative officials and learn about other local organizations.
