Celebrating Wins in Workforce Development 🏆

Last week, Governor Josh Stein announced the winners of the 2026 Governor's NCWorks Awards of Distinction, honoring outstanding examples from the state’s workforce development system.

Awardees include the students and jobseekers who receive training, the professionals who provide career services, and the employers and other organizations that support a skilled workforce. The award recipients were recognized on October 14 and 15 during ceremonies at the NCWorks Partnership Conference.

Hickory Rotarian Susan Kelly Smith shared her journey living with metastatic breast cancer at the October 21 meeting. She’s a strong woman and facing her third battle with breast cancer. It was an emotional and inspiring program. We love and support our fellow Rotarians and all learned something special during her presentation which includes the importance of spending time with family and friends, make time for special adventures, enjoy nature, eat healthy, exercise, don’t be a workaholic and don’t let stress take over your life. Hickory Rotarians received Paul Harris Fellows (PHF) at the October 21 meeting. President Kristine Fritzinger Hutton awarded Bruce Meisner, Suzanne Trollan and Philip Reed with Paul Harris pins. The PHF recognition honors individuals who have given at different levels starting at $1,000. The Rotary Foundation funds global and local humanitarian projects- such as polio eradication, clean water initiatives, mobile health clinics, disaster relief, and educational scholarships.Rotary District 7670

Rotarians volunteering at the United Way John Hall Cross Country meet. Hundreds of high school athletes are participating this year. Each school participating must do a community service project for their community to strive the importance of “Service Above Self.” Rotary District 7670

Rotarians … wearing Rotary and community leader hats welcomed athlete Adriaan Wildschutt at a dinner at LR, along with United Way and LR leaders on October 13. Adriaan, from South Africa, moved to the US for college to run cross country- Costal Carolina and Florida State. He ran in the Paris Olympics and on track to compete in the next Olympics in L A. He competes professionally for HOKA NAZ Elite shoes. He will meet with athletes at the John Hall Invitational Cross Country meet today at Southside Park in Newton. More than 500 High School students from NC. Be on the lookout later today for a post about the meet.

Due to the rainy weather, b**r sales at Oktoberfest on Saturday at 3 pm have stopped. Tomorrow’s weather looks better and as of now Rotarians will be at the b**r garden near the CommScope Stage tomorrow at Noon.
