The evidence keeps pointing in the same direction.

Voucher programs are often sold as a way to help students escape struggling schools. But in state after state, the biggest beneficiaries are families whose children were already enrolled in private schools. Meanwhile, public dollars are diverted away from the public schools that serve the overwhelming majority of students.

Public schools accept every child who walks through the door. They are accountable to taxpayers and serve as the foundation of our communities.

If we want stronger schools and greater opportunity, the answer is investing in public education — not draining resources from it.

Vouchers redirect taxpayer dollars from public schools to private schools that can pick and choose who they serve. That's not education freedom, it’s privatization. New York must opt-out and reject President Trump’s school voucher tax credit scam.

Had to do it for New York

Thank you, Governor Tina Kotek, for putting Oregon's students and public schools first by rejecting the federal voucher scheme. When a voucher program conflicts with a state's values, leaders say no. Oregon did.

States like New York and Illinois should be next. Opt out. Public dollars belong in public schools.

Governor Kathy Hochul: Oregon just showed the way.

Governor Tina Kotek opted out of Trump's federal voucher scheme because it doesn't align with her state's values.

New York should do the same. Opt out. Keep public dollars where they belong.
