As a social media influence and public figure in my community, I believe having a platform means using my voice for the things that matter, even when they are uncomfortable to talk about.
A former Cornell student has filed a lawsuit alleging that seven fraternity members sexually assaulted her in 2024. The criminal investigation has since been reopened and is expected to be presented to a grand jury. These remain allegations, and no one has been criminally convicted in this case.
But this matters beyond one case.
We spend so much time teaching our girls to watch their drinks, stay together, share their location, and protect themselves. We need to put that SAME energy into teaching our boys about consent.
Being intoxicated is not consent. Silence is not consent. And respect and boundaries go BOTH ways. Every person, regardless of gender, deserves to have their boundaries respected, and every person has a responsibility to respect the boundaries of others.
Teach our girls to use their voices, but PLEASE teach our boys to listen. Teach ALL of our young people that consent, respect, and boundaries are not optional.
Preventing sexual violence cannot be the responsibility of women alone.
