The Tile Heritage Foundation, founded in 1987 as a member supported, nonprofit, charitable, organization dedicated to promoting an awareness and appreciation of ceramic surfaces in the United States. Tile Heritage maintains Archives & Collections, publishes information about historic and contemporary tiles, provides links to artisans through our Member Gallery and is a conduit for clay education for teachers and the community through our website. As we expand and remodel our existing world, increasing numbers of old tiles as well as architectural terra cotta and mosaic facades are torn away, thoughtlessly discarded and lost forever. Join in the historic venture to unearth the ceramic traditions that beautify our homes and urban centers today. Participate in playing a vital role in stimulating public appreciation and support for our national ceramic treasure. Invest in preserving one of America's most permanent, yet vulnerable, artistic traditions. Why should we care about the fate of ceramic surfaces in America? Because we are all a part of the tradition; this is our heritage.

A 1920s colonial home gets new life and keeps its Victorian style mojo!

This is the kind of renovation we love to hear about at the Foundation.

The bathroom floors of this fine home show what is possible with simple shapes, historical style, and exceptional tile installers.

This plaid mosaic pattern, made popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras 1880s to 1910s, is executed flawlessly with modern tile and time-tested installation methods by Columbia River Tile & Stone.

During the period, "textile-like" patterns like this bordered rug design were made with unglazed porcelain tile and used where water resistance and tile's hygienic properties were essential.

The project won the 2026 CID Award for Residential Ceramic Tile Installation and has been inducted into the National Tile Installation Registry.

To see the other bathrooms and connect with Jeff at Columbia, visit the project at the Registry.

The Kennedy Center....

"Is there any tile in there we should know about?"

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was designed by architect Edward Durell Stone (1902–1978).

By the mid-1950s, Stone had rejected the functionalism of the International Style of his early career and moved on to New Formalism, which, for Stone, featured symmetry, columns, white marble, and geometric motifs.

Completed in 1971, the original Kennedy Center bathrooms featured this circle-in-square pattern from floor to ceiling. This textured grid is a common design element in many of Stone's buildings. At the Kennedy Center, this treatment carries through to the exterior stone paving that surrounds the building today.

Over the decades since, all the public bathrooms have been renovated, leaving these original tiles in just a few locations.
