Light Up Fiji

Light Up Fiji Benefits:
The benefits of this program are far reaching. Villagers health would be ameliorated on many levels.

Our Mission is to support the people of Fiji and their environment by bringing clean, healthy, renewable light to replace dirty kerosene lamps into Fijian homes throughout the archipelago. Hazards of Kerosene:
Among the hazards of Kerosene it is reported that there are serious burns, respiratory problems and skin issues many of these health concerns resulting in death. Children would have healthy,

strong light by which to study thus improving their ease of study, and supporting their eyesight. The families would no longer be breathing the toxins emitted by kerosene. All of which will improve their opportunities to fulfill their potential as world citizens. The threat of burns or dying in a fire would no longer exist. The need to pump more fossil fuel from the ground to supply light for homes would be dramatically diminished. Additional Carbon Dioxide would not be emitted into the atmosphere. There would be no threat of fuel spills during transportation. And light would depend only on a natural source – the sun – which is abundant in Fiji.

Great news: thanks to all of your advocacy, and the fierce opposition of many champions in Parliament this week, the government did not put the mobile phones ban bill up for debate in the Senate today - delaying it until October at the earliest.

The government only puts bills to a vote if they know they have the numbers. They will not vote on a bill knowing they will lose. So, every day it is not listed is a day we know they don't have the numbers.

Over 154,340 of you signed a petition to call on Parliament to oppose the bill. And your voice has been heard.

Our deepest thanks to these great allies in Parliament, who stood with the community to oppose this dangerous bill (clockwise form top left: Adam Bandt MP, Peter Khalil MP, Ged Kearney MP, Senator Murray Watt, Zali Stegall MP, Andrew Giles MP, Helen Haines MP, Rebecca Sharkie MP& Senator Stirling Griff, Senator Nick McKim, Terri Butler MP, Andrew Wilkie MP).
