Temporary Trail Closures Begin April 20 at Tamarack Health Hayward Medical Center


NOTICE FOR PATRONS WHO ACCESS THE LIBRARY TRAIL FROM HOSPITAL TRAILS

“Temporary Trail Closures Begin April 20 at Tamarack Health Hayward Medical Center

Hayward, WI - Tamarack Health Hayward Medical Center will begin temporary trail closures on April 20, 2026, due to planned forest management work near the hospital trails.

Crews will thin red pine trees south of Indian School Lake and remove small areas of diseased trees to improve forest health and reduce pest spread.

For your safety:

· Stay out of all posted work areas

· Follow all closure signs

· Keep a safe distance from equipment and crews

Falling trees and limbs, along with limited visibility, make these areas dangerous. Only authorized personnel are allowed in active work zones.

Crews will also treat invasive buckthorn. Some stumps will be marked with blue dye—do not touch these stumps.

Trail access from the library entrance may be limited during this work. This is the first phase in a multi-phase clearing project. Tamarack Health will provide updates when trails reopen and when the remaining phases are scheduled to begin.

April 2026. Improvements to the vegetation and trees on the Hospital property has started. Logging on the property has begun. Please be fully aware of all activities around you when walking on the trails. There has been a need to remove seriously diseased and dead red pine on the property for several years. It may look messy now, for the short term. But, the long term goal of a healthy forest is most important.

This morning, Monday, March 16 the entire system of Hospital trails were rolled and single tracked. Unfortunately, the second tracker was not working but the one track is excellent and I hope we'll get a couple of weeks of skiing left in this season.

There are temps in the 40's ahead but still below freezing at night so get out early if you can to enjoy the end of the season.

On Friday afternoon 1/16 the Hasta Ski Trails were rolled and tracked and should be firmed up and good to ski this weekend. These are the best tracks of the season and among the best ever during my tenure. Get out there!

This morning the clear cut loop was cleared of obstructing branches. John and new groomer, Harry Maranowicz, and I did the job.

Then all trails were tracked, Yo Ho!!! It's so beautiful with the snow-flocked trees (Click on Photos). Get out there before it warms up!!

John and I have cleared the Lakeview and Pine Loops and tomorrow morning 4 of us will brave single digits to clear the rest of the Clear Cut Loop. Then new tracks will be reset ASAP everywhere.

This morning, Monday, Dec 29, the entire system of Hasta trails were rolled by John Wightman.

Only the Lakeview, Pine, and Clearcut loops were tracked by Scott (except for one stretch of the Clearcut)

Many branches still extend into the skier's path. Correcting that will take a few days. Please consider taking a pruner in your ski jacket to help us get this work done expedently. Thank you!
