Why is Brian Johnson doing this? Because he sees the country being torn apart. If it continues the inevitable is something none of us want to have happen. We don’t have a foreign enemy that is destroying us, we are doing it ourselves. We also can stop it. What is the purpose of the m
eetings? To bring diverse people together as friends to talk openly and honestly about our differences and the future of our country. What are the goals you want to accomplish by having the meetings? To create a community with different minded people that, despite differences, can get along with each other and be an example to the rest of the country. A helpful example would be how many Wisconsinites unite around the Green Bay Packers. During last year’s playoff game against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers, it didn’t matter whether the fans that were at the game or those of us that watched it on TV were Democrat or Republican, what their skin color was, or how much money they made. During that game we cheered together and cried together when we lost. An argument can be made that as Wisconsinites we unite more together around the Packers than anything else. Whether Aaron Rodgers stays or goes we still will be Packer fans. We should be united as “Americans” (E Pluribus Unum), but instead, our divisions are so great, that they can be described by anger and hatred towards “the other”. As in a football game when the team is losing, they huddle together at half time and plan to win the game in the second half. They come together as a team. Nobody is trying to bring us together as Americans. We have no Abraham Lincoln. We can come together as Americans if we WANT to. UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL! The “Double Handshake Community” is a specific place given to do this. What specifically happens at the meetings? There will be a subject that will be the focus for that meeting that will be posted to the Double Handshake Community-DHC page. Speakers will speak on opposing sides similar to a debate. Then we all get to share and listen as individuals around tables with a cup of coffee. (Note: Have you noticed how people tear into each other apart from Facebook? That won’t happen with us. Because we’re going to “talk” to each other with “respect” over a cup of coffee using a secret ingredient: “LISTENING”. When we are done as a group, we’re going to try to come together with “FACTS” we can all agree on. We probably won’t change each other’s opinions, but if we’re honest and humble we can try to find the truth to agree on. Who do you want to come to the meetings? People who are fed up with the way the country is going and want to try to make peace with those they disagree with. Who do you not want to come to the meetings? Those that just want to argue and have “their way” and divide us even more. Why the name Double Handshake? First my definition of 3 handshake types:
#1 “THE SLAP HANDSHAKE” Example: The Loser after a tennis match has to shake his opponents hand but looks away, gives a “quick disrespectful slap” for a handshake.
#2 “THE PROFESSIONAL HANDSHAKE” Example: Another losing tennis player looks the winner in the eye and while firmly shaking his hand says “good match”.
#3 “DOUBLE HANDSHAKE” Example: When you are about to leave the home and someone you care about that you won't see for a long time and you use both hands to shake their hand showing how much you care for the friend. Our goal is this-while we may openly and honestly disagree with “the other”, at the end of the night, give the “Double Handshake” because we care and respect everyone as a person and as an American and will give up ground to hate “the other”. How is this different from other community meetings? Most community meetings are socially driven and stay away from divisive controversy. How are you going to find speakers? With your help. Is this purpose to find common ground? YES AND NO. Yes, in the sense that we all have in common that we’re Americans and want what we think is best for our country. No, in the way the common ground movement stays away from divisive issues whereas we openly deal with them. The “Cancer of hate” will continue to grow if we don’t deal with it. Can you give an example of how you want the meetings to work out? Yes, like a strong family at Thanksgiving that talks openly about their political differences yet their Family bond keeps differences from becoming divisions. Is there a biblical scripture that embodies your goals and purposes? Yes, Romans 14:19 “Let us therefore follow after the things which make peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. (KJV)”
