Language matters.

As we continue to learn more about the importance of the language we use, we want to share this information with our followers.

The media often uses language such as "domestic dispute," "domestic disturbance," "estranged partner," "crime of passion," and/or "domestic violence incident." Although we know that domestic violence is a series of acts or a pattern of behavior designed to gain and maintain power and control. It is, in fact, not an isolated "incident," not a "dispute," not a "crime of passion" where one person suddenly "snapped."

Many experts in this field highlight the importance of our language. We hope our followers will join us in being more intentional about the language we use to accurately describe and portray the severity of domestic violence and its impacts.

Domestic‑violence homicide rates are rising across the country. In Nebraska, there were around 30 DV‑related deaths in 2025. Ohio saw 157 deaths from June 2024 to June 2025. Kansas reported approximately 20 deaths in 2024. States like Minnesota and Iowa are seeing similar upward trends.

This is why our work, violence prevention education, is necessary. We must start with young people. Adolescents and teens deserve the tools to recognize unhealthy relationship dynamics, understand the impacts of control, isolation, and coercion, and build relationships rooted in respect. And young people are hungry for this information and want to lead the efforts!

Prevention also means looking inward, learning to identify our own harmful behaviors, and choosing to do better. This is noticing when we're acting out of fear or control, practicing healthy communication skills, and recognizing if we are overstepping a set boundary. These skills are just as important, if not more, than recognizing warning signs in others.
