The Still Place supports families with serious and terminally ill children through a no cost week long single family retreat. Retreats are designed to enhance resiliency, empowerment, self-determination and hope for the entire family. For many families this is the first time they have experienced a family vacation in many years and many times for the first time since their child was diagnosed. The

weekly schedule may include any of the following: The Still Place Day which involves staying at the house with a hike, art and play in the creek;Excursion Day at a local park; Family Day which often includes gem mining; Iron Chef Day in which the children visit a local farm, work in our garden and then prepare a meal for their family, Fridays include an Adventure and then in the evening the No Parent Party and Parents Night Out; Saturdays are a Wild Card Day in which the family decides what they would like to do on their last day. Families enjoy activities such as hiking, gem mining, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, kayaking and many more adventures which are abundant in the mountains and valleys of Western North Carolina. Heaton family 2026

The family started their week with birdhouse making with a volunteer from the Folk School and took a nice walk on Chatuge Dam. Continuing the fun, the family visited the Still Waters Landing Farm, where they played with chickens, pigs, and more. Wednesday, the family took a nice boat ride and had an amazing picnic. No parent party Thursday!! Mom received a massage and the kids had a pizza party and played games. The rest of the week the family spent time at the property enjoying the creek and nature.

Summer Camp 2026 is a wrap!! We started this three years ago for any mom who had gone through a Still Your Mom retreat and wanted to come back to reunite with fellow SYMs. There’s no programming, just time for moms who are suffering an immeasurable loss, to spend together and be a kid again!
Summer Camp is only possible because of the generosity of our amazing community, who will allow us to participate in these amazing activities and/or provide meals at no cost or reduced costs and by donations from our amazing supporters. Our last day of Summer Camp didn’t disappoint! We visited the Old Jail Museum, had an AMAZING yoga class in town, lunch at Fat Dog, a little shopping on the square and ended it with gem mining. Until next year my friends 🥂

Super awesome golf tournament again this year! Thank you Mountain Harbour for all you did to make this run so smoothly! Thank you so much to everyone who came out to play or at least spread the word to others. Without the support this community has shown to The Still Place throughout the last decade, we would not be able to do what we do. What an honor it was to serve these precious women last weekend! We had our VERY FIRST retreat for moms who are caretakers for their seriously ill children. It’s a way to bring these moms together to share their stories, their struggles, their true feelings with other moms who can completely relate. We had serious moments of reflection and reality but as always, we threw in a lot of laughs and fun too!!
