Meet one of the Peconic Estuary’s most unique residents, which I’m sure a lot of you are familiar with, the diamondback terrapin! These turtles are the only turtles in North America that spend their lives in brackish coastal waters, thriving in our salt marsh ecosystems.

Some fun facts:
• Their beautiful shell patterns are unique to each individual.
• Diamondback terrapins help keep estuary food webs balanced by feeding on snails, crabs, and other small animals.
• Females can grow much larger than males, sometimes reaching over 9 inches long!

One of the biggest threats to terrapins is accidental capture in recreational crab traps. That’s why turtle excluder devices (TEDs, shown on second slide) are so important. These simple attachments reduce trap openings, helping keep terrapins out while still allowing crabs to enter.

By using TEDs, we can protect local turtle populations and support a healthier estuary for all the species that call it home.

Yesterday we picked up our 2026 oyster seed!! We’re so excited to see these juveniles grow over the next few weeks! Our restorative oyster garden program supports Peconic Baykeeper’s overall mission of protecting and restoring our local water ways by bolstering the population of oysters in local shellfish spawner sanctuaries. Right now our over wintered crop is growing in the oyster garden, they should be ready to enter the spawner sanctuaries soon while this new seed begins to grow and take up more room! Stay tuned for more updates!! 🦪🦪🌊🌊🩵

The new moon is happening this weekend and so is our next round of horseshoe crab monitoring! Take a look back at our last session! We hosted a tagging night and volunteers helped get 75 crabs tagged while others supported the survey! It was a great night with a beautiful sunset and the rise of a full moon! Special thank you to for stopping by to get some photos at golden hour before the sunset!

In late May we wrapped our 2025-2026 rain barrel workshop series. Thank you to all of the participants and community members who joined us at educational workshops, constructed rain barrels, and learned about how they could improve water quality through stewardship in their own backyards! We are grateful to North Fork Side By Side for funding this initiative and helping us bring education and free rain barrels to the community. If you didn’t have an opportunity to join us this past year, we hope to continue this initiative in the future so stay tuned and sign up for our newsletter for updates!

A special shout put to our partners at for attending our workshops to share their amazing homeowners rewards program!
