Going the Extra Mile for Our Parkinson’s Athletes!

A huge THANK YOU to our incredible Rock Steady Boxing coaches, Faron Burns, Jillian Luna, Jen Tate, and Wendy Palmer, for dedicating their weekend to training that will help us better serve our Parkinson’s athletes! Your commitment to learning, growing, and finding new ways to support our athletes is truly inspiring.

We also want to extend a very special thank you to Leah Dedrick from Aging Stronger in Chester, Md. for not only hosting this training but also including our YMCA coaches in the experience. We are so grateful for your generosity, collaboration, and willingness to host and include our team!

Our coaches are passionate about making a difference in the lives of people living with Parkinson’s, and investing in their continued education is one more way we ensure our athletes receive the very best support possible.

This training will help us take our program to the next level as we continue to build strength, improve balance, foster confidence, and create meaningful connections in our Parkinson’s community.

An Update on the St. Mary’s County Family YMCA Opening:

We know you’ve been waiting. We know we’ve given you dates before. And we know how frustrating it is to hear that you have to wait again. We had hoped that this would be the weekend we could finally welcome you through the doors of the St. Mary’s County Family YMCA. Unfortunately, we learned late this evening that our final required inspection will not take place until early next week, which means we will not be able to open tomorrow as planned.

We are incredibly disappointed, and we are truly sorry.

Our team has been working tirelessly to get this Y open, but we cannot open our doors until every required inspection and approval is complete.

After the changes you’ve already experienced, we don’t want to give you another opening date until that final inspection is complete and we know with certainty that we can open.

When we give you the next date, we want you to be able to count on it.

Thank you for your patience, your encouragement and, yes, even your frustration. We know it comes from a community that is ready for its YMCA.

We’re ready too. And we cannot wait to finally welcome you inside. ❤️

Rebecca’s Story

“The Y is my outlet. My time. My happy place.”

After retiring, Rebecca decided it was time to focus on her health—physically and mentally.

In January, a friend invited her to join a class at the YMCA. Seven months later, she’s still going strong.

She started with the YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program and has continued to challenge herself through cardio dance, Steady & Strong, Stretch, and other fitness opportunities. She’s even planning to try Shine!

But the impact has been about so much more than exercise.

“I might not always want to go, but when I walk out after each class or workout, I’m renewed.”

For Rebecca, the Y has become a place where she feels comfortable and accepted—a “no judgment zone.” She’s made new friends, found community, and discovered a renewed sense of confidence.

And the results speak for themselves.
Her doctor took her off one blood pressure medication and reduced another. She has lost more than 30 pounds, and most importantly, she says:

“I’m more confident because of the changes I am seeing.”

This is what YMCA Health Intervention programs are all about. Helping people take control of their health, discover what they’re capable of, and find a community that keeps them moving forward.

Rebecca, thank you for sharing your story and reminding us that sometimes the hardest step is simply showing up.
We know your story will inspire others to take that first step.

Your health. Your community. Your Y.
Stop by your YMCA and ask about our Health Intervention Programs.
