With June being Men's Health Month, take the time to go and get your annual check-up, your health is important and most of the services are free or low cost. What's actually covered by my plan?

It's still the most common question about health insurance, and covered services are unfortunately not always easy to identify, even from a benefits statement.

If you enroll in a plan through an official state insurance marketplace like Connect for Health Colorado, your covered services will automatically be easier to understand, as EVERY marketplace plan covers the following 10 essential benefits:

- Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care you get without being admitted to a hospital)

- Emergency services

- Hospitalization (like surgery and overnight stays)

- Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (both before and after birth)

- Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment (this includes counseling and psychotherapy)

- Prescription drugs

- Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices (services and devices to help people with injuries, disabilities, or chronic conditions gain or recover mental and physical skills)

- Laboratory services

- Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management

- Pediatric services, including oral and vision care (adult dental and vision coverage aren’t classified as essential health benefits)

There is only one place you can buy insurance in Colorado and qualify for assistance, The Connect for Health Colorado Marketplace. No matter your age, if you have questions or need help understanding your health coverage, Hilltops Health Access is here to help. We have appointments in English and Spanish that are available during the week and Walk-Ins on most Wednesdays. We are now at 359 Main Street in Grand Junction, call us at 970-244-0850 to make an appointment.

Twenty-nine percent of the more than 277,000 Coloradans who enrolled in health insurance through Connect for Health Colorado for this plan year are aged 55 and over.

That's the highest percentage, followed by those aged 0-25 at 21 percent.

The remaining percentages are distributed fairly evenly across the remaining age brackets: 16% of enrollees are between the ages of 26 and 34, 18% are between 35 and 44, and another 16% are between 45 and 54.

This is one of our favorite graphs to look back at each year, as it highlights perfectly how the need for quality health insurance isn’t limited to one or two groups.

It’s an almost universal need, and we could not be happier that so many of you are able to access health insurance plans through Connect for Health Colorado.

How long do you typically have to pay medical bills?

Standard Medical Billing: Payment is generally due 30 days from when you receive your statement/bill.

Hospital Bills: Payment tends to be due between 30 and 90 days after you receive your statement/bill.

Emergency Services: Payment typically expected 30 and 60 days after you receive your statement/bill.

Elective procedures: Billing can run as quickly as 30 days or take up to 120 days due to coordination with insurance. Elective procedures, including dental procedures, may come with optional payment plans.

These are typical timeframes, and can be affected by state laws, insurance processing and other factors.

Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost of a covered service that you pay after you've met your deductible.

Since it can be a confusing concept, here's an example of how it works:

Before you pay your full deductible, you'll pay 100% of the out-of-pocket costs of care. So, if a doctor's visits costs $100 in out-of-pocket costs, you'll pay $100.

After you've met your deductible, for a doctor's visit that costs $100, if your coinsurance percentage is 20%, you'll pay $20 and your insurance company will pay what remains ($80).

Unlike a copay, coinsurance is generally billed after the visit instead of being paid at the time of the visit, and it is always a percentage of the cost of care rather than a flat dollar amount.

Like a copay, coinsurance counts toward your out-of-pocket max (the maximum amount you'll pay out of pocket in a plan year).
