A Strategic Innovation Grant from Goochland Education Foundation helped eighth-grade media students take their student-run morning news program to the next level β€” with upgraded broadcast equipment that brings real-world journalism experience into the classroom.

This past school year, teacher Donte Montgomery and his team of ten produced a record 32 episodes, airing every Monday morning for Goochland Middle School and the broader district. Now in its fourth year, πΊπ‘œπ‘œπ‘‘ π‘€π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘›π‘–π‘›π‘” πΊπ‘œπ‘œπ‘β„Žπ‘™π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ continues to grow β€” and so do the students behind it.

Congrats to Rylee, Maren, Evelyn, Sophia, Rhyelle, Elijah, Ashley, Emma, Arely, and Paige on an incredible year! 🎬

Learning doesn't always happen inside four walls β€” and Goochland County's third graders are proof of that! 🌿

Through our STEM in Nature grant, students recently visited Shalom Farms in Powhatan, where Goochland County Public Schools teachers and community partners led a full day of outdoor, hands-on science. From farming and composting to pollination and the water cycle, students explored real concepts in a truly real-world setting.

We're grateful for the teachers, administrators, Shalom Farms, and community partners who made this experience possible β€” and honored to play a role in bringing it to life. Here's to more learning outside the classroom!

πŸš€ Year One has officially landed!

This week we celebrated the inaugural year of GEF EdVentures at all three of our schools β€” and what a year it has been. Our students showed up every day ready to explore, create, and grow, diving into STEM and robotics, book club, chess, arts, athletics, and so much more.

We built this together β€” families, staff, and community β€” from the very beginning. And watching our students thrive this year made every moment worth it.

A huge thank you to our families, site directors, counselors, and everyone who believed in this program from day one. Thank you for being part of Year One. We're already excited for what's ahead. πŸ’™

Students modeled and observed the 8 phases of the moon using Oreo cookies, learning how the moon changes shape over time through pattern recognition and sequencing.

⭐ Constellation Creation
Students studied real constellations and designed their own star patterns, using creativity and storytelling to bring their night sky designs to life.

Students designed travel brochures inviting others to visit different planets, including facts, activities, and illustrations, then shared their work through confident presentations.

⌨️ Wireless keyboards + iPads = a game-changer for 5th graders at Goochland Elementary School!

Our "Keys to Success" Strategic Innovation Grant has put wireless keyboards in the hands of fifth graders β€” and the difference is remarkable. With a physical keyboard paired to their iPads, students enjoy full-screen views, less distraction, and more room to think, write, and create.

Typing fluency, writing stamina, digital literacy β€” these are the skills that open doors, and we're watching students build them every day. For students with disabilities especially, this tool is making a meaningful impact on how they express and share their ideas.

This is exactly the kind of innovation we love to invest in. πŸ’™
