Marble mazes, snap circuits, sketchbooks, and a rousing game of Twister! Thanks to the generous support of TowneBank, GEF EdVentures students have new hands-on enrichment kits to explore every afternoon.

The kits rotate each month among EdVentures sites at Byrd Elementary School, Goochland Elementary School, and Randolph Elementary School, so students at every site get fresh STEM, art, building, and game activities all year long.

As promised, here’s a closer look at the seven projects receiving 2026 Strategic Innovation Grants!

From kindergarteners mapping their community to high schoolers broadcasting live events, Goochland County Public Schools educators are bringing bold ideas into their classrooms:

🐝 A pollinator garden at Byrd Elementary
🧱 LEGO Science labs for K–2 students at Goochland Elementary
🗺️ Interactive county maps built by Randolph Elementary students
♻️ AI-powered trash sorting stations at Goochland Middle
🎙️ Podcast production laptops at Goochland Middle
💼 A hands-on business lab at Goochland Middle
📺 Live field broadcasting at Goochland High

Things got a little spooky (and a lot scientific) at GEF EdVentures this month!

🎃 Spooky Science at GEF EdVentures!

Students in the after-school EdVentures program at Goochland Elementary School have been busy this month, and the lab got a little spooky! Here’s what they’ve been up to:

Glow Slime: Students explored polymer chemistry, sensory textures, and the science of stretchy states of matter. (They were so into it that we only snapped one photo, at the very end!)

Pumpkin Volcanoes: Students explored chemical reactions, cause and effect, and color mixing. Young scientists at work!

Spider Web Art: Using wax resist techniques, students learned about hydrophobic materials while building fine motor control. Then they turned pipe cleaners into their own spooky creatures.

Haunted Houses: With limited materials, students took on architectural engineering, spatial awareness, and creative problem solving.

A Special Guest Scientist: A family member who is a scientist stopped by and made a giant batch of “elephant toothpaste” with a big chemical reaction! She also left behind activities for the group: nature bookmarks, salad spinner art, and a chance to use a real modern microscope.

Thank you to Site Director Kristin Payne and the whole GEF EdVentures team at Goochland Elementary for making science this much fun, and a big thank-you to our guest scientist for sharing her time and expertise!

🐾 NEW SCHOLARSHIP ALERT! 🐾

We're thrilled to partner with Goochland Pet Lovers to offer the Becky T. Dickson and Dennis Proffitt, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, a brand-new $2,000 scholarship for Goochland seniors who love animals!

Open to seniors at Goochland High School and Goochland County homeschooled students who have been involved with animals or animal welfare (volunteering, fostering, working with animals, advocacy, and more) or who hope to be in the future. Students can pursue any field of study after graduation. An animal-related path isn't required!

Right here in Henrico and Goochland counties, over 4,400 children receive a free book every month through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and Virginia Early Learning Partners.
