Some businesses sell parts. Some sell memories.

For nearly a century, Halamicek Auto Supply & Collectables has been part of the heartbeat of downtown Gonzales. Since 1928, generations of families, ranchers, mechanics, collectors, and curious travelers have stepped through those doors on St. Joseph Street.

What began as a small family auto parts shop grew into something much bigger, a place filled with stories, history, conversation, and treasures from another era. Long before chain stores and online shopping, businesses like Halamicek’s were where people gathered, caught up on local news, and found exactly what they needed, usually with a little life advice thrown in for free.

The iconic blue sign hanging over downtown is more than a landmark. It is a reminder that Gonzales still believes in family businesses, hard work, loyalty, and preserving the character that makes our town special.

In 1834, Benjamin Duncan, a Scotsman, started a ferry here to help people cross the river long before bridges existed.
During the Texas Revolution, tradition says Susanna Dickinson, one of the few survivors of the Alamo, stopped at Duncan’s home while carrying the news of the fall of the Alamo. That message helped set major events in motion, including Sam Houston ordering the Texas Army in Gonzales to retreat. On March 13, 1836, the town and ferry were burned to keep them out of enemy hands. The ferry was later rebuilt and operated until 1866.
