Our condolences to family and friends of Irene Overman Kreer, who died Saturday just shy of 100 years old. Irene made an indelible mark on the Glenview Public Library and the non-profit organization that since 1939 has been its steadfast supporter — Friends of Glenview Public Library.

She served on the Glenview Library Board of Trustees from 1970 until 1975. She then became a driving force for major fundraising activities of the Friends of Glenview Public Library as program chair and art chair.

Her most notable contribution was her vision for the Friends’ Used Book Store. She first proposed the idea to Library Executive Director Vickie Novak in 2006. Although the library was then bursting at the seams, a small space on the mezzanine was found. From its inception, Mrs. Kreer’s goal was to make it the finest bookstore on the North Shore.

When construction of a new library was conceived, Mrs. Kreer was involved in the planning, layout and fundraising for a new Used Book Store, which was given dedicated space in the southwest corner of the lobby. When it opened in 2010 she served as the day-to-day manager until 2016. That year, the bookstore was named for her, and in 2017 she was honored with a Glenview Civic Awards Special Committee Award.

Known to everyone as “Rene,” she will be remembered for her willingness to share her vast storehouse of knowledge and achieving personal fulfillment through community service.
