My heart is heavy today about a topic that deeply affects anyone who loves horses.
But before you read any further, I want to clarify one thing: This is NOT a political post.
It isn't about which political party you support or who happens to sit in the White House today.
It’s human nature to want to blame whoever is in the mainstream headlines, but wild Mustangs have been gathered and funneled out of their native range with many going to slaughter under every single administration for DECADES.
If we want to actually help them, we have to stop pointing fingers across the political aisle and start following the money.
Here is the TRUTH behind the system:
It’s a $100+ Million Business: The taxpayer-funded Bureau of Land Management (BLM) spending program relies heavily on private government contractors.
Holding Corrals are Privately Owned: "Off-range holding" isn't a non-profit sanctuary system. Multi-million dollar federal contracts pay private feedlots and landowners daily rates to hold tens of thousands of wild horses off public land.
Resource Competition: Removing wild horses opens up public land forage for low-cost commercial cattle grazing—creating a dual-subsidy system funded by taxpayers.
The Pipeline Risk: Once horses are removed, legal loopholes in federal adoption and sale programs allow private buyers to collect titles—at which point those horses lose federal protection and can end up at auctions where slaughter buyers operate.
Blaming one president doesn't save a single horse.
Changing a broken, profit-driven system does.
How You Can Actually Help TODAY:
🐴Support On-Range Fertility Management:
🐴Advocate for funding humane, cost-effective PZP/GonaCon birth control programs instead of multi-million dollar helicopter roundups.
🐴Contact Your Representatives: Urge Congress to support the SAFE Act (Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act) to permanently ban the export of American horses across foreign borders for slaughter.
🐴Share Real Information: Stop sharing partisan headlines. Share the financial truth so we can demand systemic accountability.
🐴 If you have space ADOPT a Mustang (actually two because they should not be alone 🥰)
