The Nigerian government has begun arrangements to evacuate citizens willing to return from South Africa following a fresh wave of anti-immigrant hostility.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said more than 1,000 Nigerians are expected to take advantage of the voluntary repatriation programme as fears of renewed xenophobic violence continue to grow.

He added that authorities have secured concessions allowing Nigerians with immigration-related issues to leave through the exercise instead of facing detention.

Pope Leo XIV made an apology on Monday for the role the Holy See itself played in legitimizing slavery and for having failed to condemn it for centuries, calling the Vatican’s record a “wound in Christian memory.”

Past popes have apologized for Christians’ involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. But no pope has ever publicly acknowledged, much less apologized for, the role that past popes themselves played in giving European sovereigns explicit authority to subjugate and enslave “infidels.”
