New UTV Laws Coming June 1, 2026! 🚨
The Wisconsin DNR has announced several important regulation changes for UTV riders. These changes are designed to keep everyone safer on the trails—and it’s important to know them before you ride. 🏍️
Here’s what’s new:
• Seatbelts Required for ALL Occupants: Everyone riding in a UTV—operator and passengers—must wear a seatbelt while the vehicle is moving.
• Factory Seats Only: Passengers must ride in factory‑installed seating only. No aftermarket “bump seats,” no cargo box riding, and no improvised seating. 🚫
- Why This Matters: State officials note that about 95% of fatal off‑road crashes involve people who weren’t wearing a seatbelt, a helmet, or both. These changes aim to reduce preventable tragedies.
• New Window Tint Limits: UTVs now must follow strict window‑tint rules similar to standard passenger vehicles.
• New Towing Restrictions: Towing anything with a person onboard—on public trails or routes—is now strictly prohibited.
• Higher Penalties for Property Damage: Intentional damage to trails, roads, or private property can result in fines up to three times the cost of repairs.
Reminders of Existing Laws:
• Helmets Required Under Age 18: Anyone under 18—operator or passenger—must wear a DOT‑approved helmet. ⛑️✅
• Safety Certification Required: Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, and is at least 12 years old must complete a Wisconsin-approved ATV/UTV safety course and carry their certificate when riding on public land.
