The SCVM is now listed under memorials on the American Legion website. Across the country and around the world, U.S. war, military and veterans memorials stand to honor those who served in uniform and the battles they fought to protect our nation’s freedoms. The American Legion has established a database to identify the locations, document histories and share photographs of our nation’s monuments and memorials to those who have served. Check it out!

2nd LT. Julia S. Barnes

We remember many of the fallen on this Memorial Day and would like to share some information about the only Sheboygan County woman to be killed in World War II. Her name is engraved at the Sheboygan County Veterans Memorial on the front of the 5th (from the right) large black granite stone under the arches.

Army Nurse Corps 2nd LT. Julia S. Barnes, born 15 January 1915 died in a non-battle air crash in Assam, Ledo, India on March 4, 1945. Commissioned in the Army Nurse Corps in April, 1942, Lt. Barnes received her training at Williams Field, Chandler, Ariz., the Pecos, Tex., Army Airfield, and Camp Swift, Tex., and left for overseas in April, 1944. She was assigned to the 69th General hospital at Ledo Assem, India.

On 4 March 1945 she was a passenger aboard the C-47 #41-18554 when they departed the airfield at Dinjan, India during a ferry mission to Ledo, India. They had a 2-man crew along with 25 passengers, including 15 female nurses. While attempting to land under foggy conditions, they made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. This was the single highest fatality of American females in WWII.

The body of Lt. Barnes, which had been temporarily interred in the Kalaikunba Military cemetery near Calcutta, India, was returned to the United States in 1948 and interned at Wildwood Cemetery in Sheboygan with full military honors.
