💚 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: WHITE-FRONTED AMAZON 💚
Amazona albifrons

We’re continuing our Amazon series with a little bird that comes with plenty of personality! Also called the Spectacled Amazon, the white-fronted is the smallest Amazon species—but that doesn’t mean small needs or a small voice! 🦜

🌎 Native Habitat
Mexico and Central America, where they live in woodlands, forest edges, and other areas with trees for feeding, shelter, and nesting.

📏 Size & Lifespan
About 10 inches long and approximately 188–242 grams. They can live 50 years or more, so bringing one home means planning for decades of care.

🎨 Physical Traits
Mostly green with a white forehead, blue on the crown, red around the eyes, and a pale yellow beak. Unlike most Amazons, adult males and females have a visible difference: males have red feathers along the leading edge of the wings, while females have green in those areas.

💚 Personality
Intelligent, curious, and full of opinions! They can be playful and affectionate, but every bird is an individual. Trust takes patience, and companionship should always respect the bird’s boundaries. Like other Amazons, hormonal periods can bring changes in behavior.

📣 Noise & Talking
Their calls can be loud, sharp, and surprisingly powerful for their size! Some learn words and household sounds, but talking is never guaranteed. You need to love the bird whether it talks or just loudly announces its opinions.

🥦 Diet
A quality pellet-based diet with a variety of fresh vegetables, leafy greens, and opportunities to forage. Here at the rescue, fruit is an occasional treat, and seeds and nuts are limited. Amazons can become overweight, so portions and daily exercise matter.

🪵 Care & Enrichment
A spacious cage, natural perches, plenty of safe things to chew, foraging activities, and daily time to move and interact are essential. Add regular avian veterinary care and a consistent schedule with 10–12 hours of quiet, dark sleep.

🏡 Before Bringing One Home
A smaller Amazon still needs a big commitment. These birds need patient people who can handle noise, respect body language, and provide a stimulating home through every stage of life.

🦜 A few things I’d like to clear up about our adoption policies here at T & A Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary.

Please read this before applying so you know what to expect. ❤️

📋 There is an adoption process.

That includes an application, home-check photos and video, a phone interview, and a copy of your driver’s license.

It may seem like a lot, but we need to know who we are placing our birds with. Scammers, backyard breeders, hoarders, and people with bad intentions are out there. It is our responsibility to do our due diligence and give these birds the best chance at a safe, appropriate home.

📅 We do not hold birds.

When you apply, please be ready to move forward if everything looks good. Once your application and interview are completed and we feel you could be a good fit, we need to get your meeting scheduled promptly—typically that week.

We will not hold a bird for two or three weeks while someone decides when they can visit. Too many times, I have done that only for someone to buy a bird elsewhere, change their mind, repeatedly reschedule, or simply not show up. Meanwhile, that bird missed other opportunities to find a home.

The goal is to find a good fit as soon as reasonably possible. If you aren’t ready yet, that’s okay! Please wait to apply until you are.

When I post a bird as available, that means the bird is available at that time and remains available until placed. Occasionally, we can even accommodate a same-day meeting once the entire approval process is completed.

Most meetings take place on weekends, preferably before noon, but we do our best to accommodate other times when possible.

🎄 Our holiday adoption pause is temporary.

We are NOT closing the rescue permanently, and this does NOT automatically stop intake. Intake depends on available space.

Our tentative last adoption day before the holiday break is November 22. That date is not set in stone. We will not be scheduling meetings the weekend of November 14 because it is Danny’s birthday weekend.

After that, regular adoptions will pause until after the first of the year.

The only possible exceptions are repeat adopters, considered individually when a bird seems like an excellent fit. I may reach out to you, or you are welcome to contact me if you see a bird you’re interested in.

We do not place birds as Christmas gifts. I know not everyone agrees with that policy, but it is a decision I have made for the birds in our care, and it will remain our policy.

🏡 Our no-apartment policy still applies.

Shared walls can mean shared exposure to smoke, fumes, and other airborne chemicals. You may do everything right in your own home and still have no control over what happens next door.

I have my reasons for this requirement, and it is part of how I choose homes for our birds.

👧 Our policy regarding children under 12 also remains.

We do not typically place large parrots in homes with children under 12. This is for the safety of both the children and the bird.

Occasional exceptions may be considered for experienced families whose children have grown up around large parrots already living in the home. Those exceptions are individual decisions, not a guarantee of approval.

These policies are not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. They are meant to protect the birds.

❤️ Why all the rules?

Are they sometimes a pain to keep up with? Absolutely. But I don’t make them to be mean or make adoption unnecessarily difficult.

I make them because these birds deserve safety, stability, and the best possible chance at a lasting home. If that means a bird stays here longer while we wait for the right person, so be it. That bird is safe, cared for, and loved while we wait.

• Our oddball couple—the Patagonian conure and blue-crowned conure, who need a home together

Our Patagonian especially enjoys exploring at ground level, so that pair needs a home where safe, supervised floor time can be provided without access to furry pets.

🦜 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: LILAC-CROWNED AMAZON
Amazona finschi

Life around the rescue has kept us busy, but tonight feels like a good time to pick our Species Spotlight series back up! Next in our Amazon lineup is the beautiful Lilac-crowned Amazon—the same species as our own Gucci! 💚

🌎 Where they come from
Native to western Mexico, these parrots inhabit wooded foothills and forests. In the wild, they travel in pairs or flocks, searching for seasonally available foods.

🪶 Physical traits
Around 12–13 inches long, Lilac-crowns are among the smaller Amazons. They have mostly green feathers, a maroon forehead, and a soft lilac-blue crown that extends toward the back of the neck. A pale horn-colored beak and short tail complete the look. Males and females look alike, so appearance alone won’t reliably tell you their s*x.

⏳ Lifespan
Potentially 50 years or more! Bringing one home means planning for decades of care—and having a plan if they outlive you.

💚 Personality
Intelligent, curious, playful, and full of opinions! Lilac-crowns are often described as gentler Amazons, but each bird is an individual. A species reputation never replaces getting to know the bird in front of you.

📣 Noise & talking
Some learn words, whistles, and household sounds, but talking is never guaranteed. They still have a powerful Amazon voice, and being a smaller Amazon does not mean being a quiet one!

🥦 Diet
Here, we offer a varied vegetable chop alongside quality pellets, with measured treats and opportunities to forage. Seeds and nuts are extras rather than the whole menu. Amazons need attention to portions and exercise to help maintain a healthy weight.

🏡 Daily care
They need a spacious cage, varied natural perches, things to chew, foraging activities, daily interaction, and supervised time out to move and explore. A consistent routine and 10–12 hours of quiet, dark sleep are part of our care standard.

⚠️ Behavior & boundaries
Watch their whole body: eye pinning, a fanned tail, posture, and vocalizations all provide information. Excitement can escalate quickly, especially during hormonal periods. Respect their space, reward cooperation, and never force handling.

🤝 The right home
Someone patient who appreciates an independent bird, can handle loud calls, and understands that trust is earned. Affection should always happen on the bird’s terms.

These beautiful parrots deserve far more than admiration for their colors or talking ability. They deserve a lifetime of understanding. 💚

Meet Kevin & Lola! 💛 These two sweet little cockatiels came to us together and were described as very bonded, but we haven’t seen that connection during their time here.

They’ve been housed separately, side by side, and even when they’re out together, they don’t really seek each other out or interact much. We haven’t seen them feeding one another, either. So far, they seem more like familiar neighbors who each really want to hang out with a person! 🥰

Both are sweet, hand-tame, and flighted—with that typical cockatiel attitude mixed in, of course! 😂

A big thank-you to two wonderful ladies for sending some love to the flock! ❤️🦜

Misty sent a box packed with all kinds of goodies, and some have already made their way into cages! There were a bunch of those little spinners that our smaller flock members love so much. That definitely made me—and some little feathered friends—very happy! 🥰

Our friend 🍁Parris shared that our newest intake, the grey, had been weighing heavily on her heart. She wanted to send him a little package so he would know he is loved and appreciated. She sent a bag of mixed nuts and a little toy to help decorate his cage, which I put in for him yesterday. ❤️

He is doing well and starting to eat a good bit. This is a big change for him, and he is still very shy. He won’t be available for adoption anytime in the near future. Right now, we’re giving him time to settle in and feel safe. Hopefully, one day he’ll be ready for a family of his own—that’s always the goal. Until then, he is loved right here. 🩶

Tooty the tiel found his people—and a cockatiel buddy—on Sunday! 💛

Tooty had a loving home for the last four or five years, but he shared it with a green cheek who wasn’t too excited about sharing his mom or his space. Tooty needed a friend like him to whistle with and do cockatiel things. 🥰

While I was talking with his owner about bringing Tooty here, an application came in from a family whose son had a young male cockatiel they thought would enjoy a friend. Once Tooty arrived, I had a feeling he was just the bird for them.

They came to meet him on Sunday, and he instantly took to the family—especially their son—even allowing head pets! ❤️

Once home, Tooty met his new feathered brother, and I’m happy to report that the two are living their best lives together. Sometimes the right application comes along at just the right time. 🐦🐦

🚨 LOST COCKATIEL — SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV 🚨

Local flock friends, please be on the lookout for this boy! He flew from his home near Shepherd University (Shepherd College) in Shepherdstown. His owner heard him heading toward the Domino’s area and has been walking and driving around searching and calling for him.

He is a gray cockatiel with a yellow face and crest, bright orange cheeks, and white patches on his wings. ❤️

📍 Please share throughout Jefferson and Berkeley counties, WV, and nearby Virginia communities.

If you see him or hear an unfamiliar bird calling, please message us directly here at T & A Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary. Include the exact location, the time, and a photo if possible. Please don’t chase him—keeping him in sight and reporting his location can help his owner reach him.

Sunday morning, my good friend Leesa, who runs A comfy perch Parrot Rescue in Shickshinny, PA, came for a visit—and our little Sugar went home with her. ❤️

Leesa has a middle-aged male cockatiel who lost his mate, and Sugar is a middle-aged female who lost hers before coming here. It seemed like a wonderful opportunity for two birds who had lost their companions to have a friend again.

We often look for same-s*x companionship to avoid breeding, but I know Leesa and trust her care. She’s a fellow rescuer whose goal is simply to give her boy the companionship he’s always known. My hope is that, with time and introductions, these two will find comfort and happiness together. Sugar deserves to have a little friend by her side again. 💕

While Leesa was here, she held some of the babies, and we enjoyed a nice visit. I also sent her home with a few cages that could help with quarantine and other rescue needs. We have an abundance of cages right now, and whenever I can share supplies with another rescue, I’m happy to help. We all know how much goes into this work, and helping each other matters.
