This setup was successful in attracting a Queen Bombus impatiens to start her nest this year.
Two square concrete pavers top and bottom with a square clay pot (half-glazed) in between.
Likely the most important element is what isn’t visible. An abandoned deer mouse nest (found in an old BBQ grill) was placed inside the overturned pot and one corner of the square pot was left overhanging the edge enough to allow for a bumblebee entrance.
Queen is laying now and workers are foraging for pollen and nectar.

Elana also provided a link where the Organic Raw Cotton of the type she used in her study is available. She used 16 grams and included “mouse scent” with the bedding. (See her video for the success rate of attracting Queen Bumblebees to nest sites.)
