Germantown Education Foundation was established in 1993 as an initiative of the City of Germantown and incorporated in 2006. The Foundation's vision is to sustain the City of Germantown's commitment to excellence in providing a top-quality education for all of its students with highly qualified teachers who have the necessary academic tools and facilities to succeed. Numerous studies show communities with outstanding and innovative educational programs retain economic prosperity because they are able to attract business and community leaders who take pride in where they live and work. GEF believes education is an essential ingredient to ensure Germantown continues to prosper with an excellent quality of life that in addition to a State of Tennessee leading public school system, includes civic-minded leadership, high-level representatives of community businesses, solid property values, and strong economic growth. We LOVE visiting HMS room 202 and were excited to present them with a GEF mini-grant to cover new sensory supplies and hands-on manipulatives needed to meet the diverse learning and developmental needs of the students in the class.

Mrs. Betchick is our 2026 GEF Transformative Grant Recipient, and we are continually amazed by the creative learning approaches she develops to meet the unique needs of her students. Her dedication to finding innovative ways to help every student succeed is truly inspiring!

The GEF Run Candy Cart visited Ms. Howard's 3rd grade class at Forest Hill! Ms. Howard's class reached 100% participation for the GEF Run, so we danced to "tootsie roll" and everyone picked their favorite candy!

11:00am - Color Run
10am - 12pm - STANGFEST! Houston High SGA will have bounce houses, games and tons of fun on the football field for GMSD families!

Forest Hill Kindergarten Teacher, Mrs. Purdy, received a GEF mini-grant to help with managing emotions!

Kindergarten students are learning not only academic skills, but also how to manage emotions, solve problems, cooperate with others, persevere through challenges, and show kindness and empathy. This project will provide students with hands-on, developmentally appropriate tools that make social-emotional learning meaningful and help create a classroom environment where every student feels valued and connected.

Mrs. Heim, a math teacher at Houston Middle School, received a GEF mini-grant to purchase manipulatives, games, and teacher demonstration tools to help students better understand challenging math concepts. Her goal is to help students achieve mastery-level test scores by incorporating creative, hands-on learning strategies into her classroom!

Supporting GMSD students and teachers is a community effort.

On Monday, September 28, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a $100,000 matching grant to the Germantown Education Foundation (GEF), continuing the City’s partnership with the organization to enhance educational opportunities across the Germantown Municipal School District.

The City’s FY27 budget includes the annual matching grant, which matches non-City funds raised by GEF in the preceding fiscal year. In the past year, GEF provided more than $115,000 in grants to GMSD classroom teachers for educational enhancements and invested $50,000 in its endowment fund to help support future projects.

The impact of that support can be seen throughout GMSD, from classroom enhancements to opportunities that make a meaningful difference for students. One example is a new accessible swing set at Houston Middle School, funded through a GEF grant, that has brought joy to students.

We’re proud to continue partnering with GEF to invest in the students, teachers and schools that make GMSD such an important part of our community.

Today, we celebrated our FIRST class to reach 100% class participation in the GEF Run for Education! Congratulations to Mrs. McLaughlin’s 5th-grade class at Forest Hill Elementary!

Want the GEF Candy Cart to visit your classroom? All you have to do is get 100% of your class registered for the GEF Run for Education!

For example, if your class has 20 students, you need 20 race registrations under your teacher’s name. Those registrations can come from students, family members, friends, or anyone who wants to support your teacher and GMSD!

Forest Hill RTI Teachers received a mini-grant for classroom materials and flashcards to help their students. Secret Stories teaches phonics the way the brain wants to learn, which is through patterns, stories, music, and movement. The mnemonic-based phonics tool helps advance the speed of phonics instruction, giving learners access to as much of the phonics code as possible, as fast and as soon as possible.
