💜📚 October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! 📚💜
Hello Nassau Region PTA Families, Educators, and Leaders!
Did you know that roughly 1 in 5 students struggle with dyslexia? Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that affects reading, spelling, and writing. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with a child's intelligence! In fact, students with dyslexia are often incredibly creative, out-of-the-box thinkers, and excellent problem solvers.
As a PTA community, our goal is to turn awareness into action. By advocating for early screenings, structured literacy, and evidence-based instruction, we can ensure every child across Nassau County learns to read with confidence.
🧠 Spotting the Signs: What to Look For
Dyslexia looks different at every age, but common signs can include:
• Difficulty learning or spelling simple, everyday words
• Trouble reading with natural fluidity or fluency
• Avoiding reading out loud or skipping reading activities whenever possible
• Mispronouncing familiar words or having trouble finding the right word
🛠️ How You Can Support as a Local Unit or Family:
1. Explore the "Science of Reading": Talk with your school's administrators about their current multi-sensory, phonics-based reading approaches.
2. Normalize the Conversation: Check out a dyslexia-friendly book list from your local library, or display stories that highlight neurodivergent heroes to remove the stigma.
3. Connect with Resources: Visit the New York State PTA Special Education Page to find toolkits, family workshops, and advocacy guidelines tailored to supporting students with disabilities and learning differences.
Let's work together to make our Long Island classrooms places where every unique brain is celebrated and supported!
