The Tanners Pond Environmental Center's motto is to "reduce, recycle and reuse." Visitors did exactly that at the Fifth Annual Benefit Yard Sale on Saturday, April 27th. The sellers had unique things to sell, from antiques and collectibles to books and clothing. Buyers were happy to be shopping and to sit at a picnic table for lunch, admiring the beautiful weather and to go for a walk afterward. Proceeds will benefit the Tanners Pond Environmental Center/Garden City Bird Sanctuary, a 501 (3) C non-profit organization for educational programs & improvements to the site. The sale was run by TPEC directors Liz Bailey, Annette Seltzer and former GCBS director, Suzie Alvey. Thanks go to volunteers: Mike Carsey, Casey Timmins, Andrew Velez, Dan McElroy, David DuPlessy, David's friend Abiola, the HOPE Club from Garden City High School, students from Holy Trinity, students from Sacred Heart Academy, Rob Alvey and others. "Vendors had a wide variety of items to sell. Vendors and sellers appeared to be happy with the event and with the beautiful weather," said Liz Bailey. The next event is the Twilight Tour and Refreshments which will take place on Saturday, May 11th from 5 pm to 7 pm at the site. The free event features an evening tour of the preserve featuring the Sunny Native Garden, Alvey Arboretum, Butterfly Garden, Hempstead Plains, Community Gardens, Wet Meadows and the Parente Memorial Garden with spring flowers in bloom and birds nesting in the nine- acre space. Home-made refreshments and drinks will be served. Volunteers are currently needed. Tanners Pond Environmental Center/ Garden City Bird Sanctuary is located opposite 181 Tanners Pond Rd. Winterfest at Garden City Bird Sanctuary The holiday season is over, the days are short, and the snow has come for more than one visit. The Garden City Bird Sanctuary held its Winterfest ceremony at the community's environmental center with about two dozen hearty participants. Each year, during the Winterfest the GCBS presents an award to a volunteer who has contributed significant service. Laura Napoli DiLallo and Joe DiLallo were awarded the "2012 Volunteer of the Year Award" for the Garden City Bird Sanctuary/ Tanners Pond Environmental Center. Joe and Laura, both Adelphi University alumni, began volunteering at the GCBS while in college. They were initially student representatives for Adelphi and later stayed on as directors. They are stepping down from the Board, but Joe, a programmer with Google, continues to manage the GCBS website with Laura, an earth science teacher. Wearing green "Mardi Gras" type necklaces, the guests helped fill all of the bird feeders, and gathered around the evergreens for hot chocolate, cookies, fruit and desserts. Then, lead by GCBS President John Cronin, the meaning of Winterfest was told. Candles were lit to ward off the darkness. The significance of the Winter Solstice leading to the coming spring has been used by many religions and cultures throughout history. Many plants have significance for winter, including mistletoe and, of course, the evergreen. The ceremony continued with a poem about trees, and a reading of the names and donors for whom trees were planted at the site in honor or memory of loved ones. During 2012, trees planted in memory and honor were: In memory of Mary Ann Fraites by Jeannine Castiglione In memory of Roy C. Weigand by Anne Hesse and Lyn Maxner for Joan Catell In memory of Anthony Cenzoprano by the Cenzoprano family In memory of Mason Los Kamp by the Los Kamp family In memory and honor of Kevin Matheis, EPA by EPA Co-workers In memory of Clifford Hauswirth by neighbors and friends In memory and honor of Dr. John H. Loret by Sabina Miller In honor of: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Laura DiLallo by the GCBS Board The site is undergoing emergency repairs from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, a blizzard, and even a car accident that crashed into the fence along Tanners Pond Road. Volunteers and funds are sought so the site can resume operations as planned for March. If you support the environment, please donate. Donations can be made through the website at www.gcbirdsanctuary.org.

The Garden City Bird Sanctuary/ Tanners Pond Environmental Center sponsored the show, "Nature in Photography" in conjunction with the Nature and Wildlife Photographers of Long Island (NWPLI). About 45 photos were available for viewing. The show was up for the month of November in the Gallery area on the lower level, along with the first floor showcases near the circulation desk. NWPLI president, Tom Pfeifer said, "We'd like to thank the Garden City Bird Sanctuary and the Garden City Public Library for providing us the opportunity to share a sampling of our group's work with you. Many of the photographs on display were shot throughout Long Island's diverse inland habitats and along our beautiful shorelines. A deep interest in sharing the splendor of Long Island and the creatures that inhabit it is at the heart of much of our work..." Pfeifer's daughter, Emily, an art student at Suffolk Community College joined her dad in showing their photos together. According to Canvas Magazine, she is the first junior (student) member of NWPLI. Diane Abell, show coordinator for NWPLI remarked, "Many of us have had work published at one time or another and we have won national and international contests." Abell added, "At another exhibit, one of our NWPLI members was asked by an exhibit attendee if the gear we use is expensive. Her reply was, 'You won't see any of us wearing expensive jewelry.' It was a perfect answer, as it was a clear statement about our passion and our priorities." The NWPLI is a group of professional and amateur photographers who have a passion for photographing and documenting beautiful nature on Long Island. They foster interest in the conservation and protection of the natural world through the art of photography, educating and inspiring membership. They offer workshops and have monthly meetings on various aspects of nature and animal photography. The club's inception was 2002 with eight members, and has grown to over 70, now one of the largest camera clubs on Long Island. One of NWPLI's main goals is to encourage all members to participate and share their own expertise so that each member can become a better photographer. They have monthly contests and critique sessions in the spirit of personal advancement rather than of competition. Several photographers have received awards in contests. For more info please go to www.NWPLI.com. Robert Alvey, founder of GCBS/TPEC commented, "I encourage everyone to come and see the beautiful photos by NWPLI. Due to Hurricane Sandy, a planned reception for the group has been cancelled, but we will schedule a tour and workshop at the Tanners Pond Environmental Center for the group next spring. Our site also took a big hit from the hurricane, but none of the memorial trees were destroyed and our volunteers are getting the area back in shape."
