There’s a difference between having a life outside of your relationship and consistently making your partner feel like they come after everything else.

Friends matter. Family matters. Individual interests matter. But so does keeping your word, considering what your partner wants, and making time because they’re important to you, not just because nothing better came along.

Walls usually aren’t built because someone stopped caring. They’re built after hurt, disappointment, fear, or not feeling emotionally safe. Pushing harder rarely brings them down.

If your partner has shut down, the answer isn’t always getting them to talk more. Sometimes it’s having the courage to go first, to soften your approach, share what’s underneath your own defenses, and give them time to believe that vulnerability is safe again.
