LEGENDS, LORE, AND LUMINARIES: APPALACHIAN FOLKLORE AND HISPANIC HERITAGE

As the autumn chill creeps over the Blue Ridge foothills and the nights grow longer, the Northeast Georgia History Center is preparing to pull back the veil on the mysterious side of history. Appalachian and Hispanic cultures both possess incredibly rich oral histories tied directly to the autumn harvest.

Taking place during the final week of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll explore how early settlers and ancient Mesoamerican cultures used oral storytelling and understanding of the natural world to survive the wild frontier. Throughout the day, students can meet Admiral David Farragut and rotate through hands-on academic and artistic stations explicitly designed to reveal how both mountain settlers and Hispanic communities used storytelling, nature, and symbolism to explain the world around them.

The Northeast Georgia History Center is proud to partner with the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville for this year’s Flippin’ for Kids Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, October 17, from 7–11 AM at the Gainesville Civic Center.

September Homeschool Day showed just how much fun the Founding of Georgia can be! 📜

General Oglethorpe shared the story of his experiences founding Georgia, while Gainesville City Planners showed students how the Oglethorpe Plan influenced city planning—and then helped our young historians put those ideas into action by designing buildings of their own! 🏛️✏️

History is better when you can experience it firsthand! 📚

We recently welcomed a group of Scouts to the Northeast Georgia History Center for a field trip filled with hands-on learning and local history. From churning butter while discovering life in the 1800s to exploring toys from bygone days and learning about the 1936 Gainesville Tornado, our field trips bring the history of Northeast Georgia to life.
