VOICES of Stephenson County is a not-for-profit, inclusive organization.

The organization welcomes all victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. VOICES began as a YWCA (Young Women Christian Association) in 1917 in Freeport, Illinois. In 1982, the YWCA established the VOICES program out of the organization’s desire to eliminate domestic violence in Stephenson County. In October 2005, the VOICES program incorporated as a separate not-for-profit organization under the name of VOICES DV. The VOICES Book Nook, a used bookstore located in the Lincoln Mall, was launched in 2010 to help support the agency’s operations and direct services. In July 2014, with the closing of Assault & Abuse Services of Stephenson County, VOICES DV began offering advocacy and therapy services to victims of sexual assault and abuse in Stephenson County as well as prevention education for students. Today the organization provides a wide variety of coordinated services to over 400 adults and children in Stephenson County.

A large, steady group of shoppers -- young and not as a young -- found deals as the VOICES Book Nook Fall Half-Price Sale kicked off Thursday. Even the volunteers were getting in on the fun! Thanks to everyone who came out!

There's still plenty of great deals. The sale continues through Nov. 14 at Freeport's Lincoln Mall. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

Today's the day! The VOICES Book Nook Fall Half Price Sale opens at 10 a.m. in Lincoln Mall. Be there early for the best selection and revel in the fun of getting great deals on everything from books to greeting cards. Remember, you are also supporting programs that assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The Holidays are just around the corner, which means it is also time for the VOICES Adopt-A-Family!

Sponsors can "adopt" a family this Holiday season, by buying gifts for a survivor and their immediate family who otherwise would be without presents this year.

If you are looking for good books at a great price, you should be at the VOICES Book Nook Fall Half Price Sale, which starts Thursday -- that's tomorrow, Nov. 5. Doors open at 10 a.m. and come early for the best selection. You will also find jigsaw puzzles, DVDs, CDs, magazines, albums and even sheet music.

Bring a friend and stock up for your fall and winter entertainment.

Here's your reminder that the VOICES Book Nook Fall Half Price Sale starts in two days. So you should be making your shopping lists of what books, CDs, DVDs, and magazines you are seeking. Halloween candy is still sitting out but VOICES is planning for Thanksgiving, which is only 24 days away. We are seeking donations of Thanksgiving dinners for our emergency shelter residents. The meals could be homecooked or purchased from a grocery store and delivered to the shelter either on Thanksgiving Day or the day before.

Across the 15th Judicial Circuit, four Domestic Violence agencies work together to ensure survivors and their families have access to the resources and support they need.

Through VOICES of Stephenson County, Hope of Ogle County, YWCA of Sauk Valley, and Riverview Center, survivors can access services such as

- 24/7 Crisis support and advocacy
- Emergency shelter and safety planning
- Counseling and emotional support
- Legal advocacy and assistance navigating the court system
- Medical advocacy and hospital accompaniment
- Support groups and resources for children and families
- Community education
- Prevention
- Referrals to additional resources

Every survivor's experience is different, and so are their needs. Whether someone is ready to leave, exploring their options, or simply needs someone to listen, support is available.
