As you know, needy women, children, and individuals in our community go without proper food, shelter, and the essentials they need to take care of themselves on a daily basis. My son has wanted to help with the homeless for a long time now. He knows how close we are/and have come to being homeless ourselves. Due to
my health issues (three major surgeries in two years, one just being a few months ago) I was unable to do his request. We have been blessed by people to help get the little things we needed to get us through our tough time. We are also blessed to still have our home at this time; unfortunately many people are not so lucky and have lost their home and everything they own. So my son and I were going to fill shoe boxes full of essentials that a person would need to take care of themselves. Then Dj (my son) came up with a wonderful idea. I got some purses given to me. He said “Mom that’s it we can fill the purses up with the stuff, and start by helping the women first”. I was overwhelmed with joy that my son has such a compassionate heart. While all of us are susceptible to hard times, women and children are at the most risk, and they make up the largest number of the homeless population, due to women needing to leave domestic abuse. There are a few shelters, but not nearly enough. Many shelters cannot allow women and children to stay for safety issues. Women are the largest homeless population in the US 41%, then children, men, mentally ill, vets, and 3% is substance abuse persons, in that order. The rise in that number is due to the increase of women leaving domestic violence. This is a huge problem, and as with anything you want to fix, you just bite off a little at a time. There is also a huge problem in the US when it comes to recycling. Textiles are 100% recyclable, yet we throw away almost half of our textiles. This makes up 5% of solid waste. Textiles have a hard time breaking down due to the lack of oxygen and sunlight. Another issue we have is plastic bags and how much is consumed. For the homeless induvial plastic bags are the very key thing they must use to handle their personal items. So actually we will be helping three problems with on small kind act. With the generous support of people like you, we will be able to help many of these women, families and individuals not only to meet essential daily needs, but to work toward a cleaner environment
At this time this is a small project, but with the time and dedication that my son and I will devote to it, will make become a great big program. Our goal is to expand the program to men and children. The support we are looking for is to put boxes within the community so that people can donate purses and backpacks. So how can you help?
1. Donate purses and/or backpacks. We just ask that there are no holes, tears in them and that the zipper works.
2. Donate items for the pack such as: shampoo, conditioner, tooth brush/paste/holder, deodorant, body wash/lotion, hair brushes, tweezers, nail clippers, a complete list can be provided email at [email protected]
3. Donate funds to www.gofundme.com/pursesofhope we have got the cost of filling a purse at $25.00. So you can choose to fill a pack or donate any amount. It will help us tremendously and be greatly appreciated. We really pray that you will help support us in this mission. We look forward to hearing from you and working with you on this great adventure. Thank you again, and we look forward to your continued support. Sincerely,
