It’s Sami’s 15th birthday on All Saints’ Eve! She has been an Animal Saints senior sanctuary resident for over two years now. Her person was too ill to take care of her, and we were asked to give Sami a safe and loving place during her remaining time on earth. Sami is such a gentle and sweet Saint, and she loves everyone. She’s welcomed other hospice Saints as they have come and gone from our sanctuary.

Thank you to Animal Saints volunteer Sammy for making the birthday cake. You helped make Sami feel so special on her birthday!

Catching up on some adoption updates! Here is Toby with his mother in their adoption portrait.

Animal Saints pulled Toby from a euthanasia list at an animal control facility. We gave him many months to recuperate after spending thousands on his medical care and recovery. Now, he’s a healthy boy who enjoys daily walks and sleeping beside his person every night.

Toby is 100% Shih Tzu, dispelling the notion that “purebreds” are never found at animal control. We help them every day, and our nonprofit is the safety net for them.

Fundraising event tomorrow at Otterkill Animal Hospital! 258 Maybrook Rd, Campbell Hall, NY 10916.

We are helping a record number of owner surrenders and pulls from euthanasia lists this year, and the Otter team has been helping with many of them. Our medical bills have skyrocketed because of it. We don’t just do basic neuters and call it good. We give the Saints we save all the medical care they deserve, including bloodwork, mass removals, dentals, and anything else they need. With that comes higher invoices. Our adoption donation requests do not cover the costs for each life saved.

Please help us continue the highest level of quality care by donating to our lifesaving efforts. If you aren’t able to make the photo shoot fundraising event, please send a donation via our website at animalsaints.org. Thank you for helping us save the Animal Saints who need our care!

Abigail was a victim of the puppy mill money making scheme. She was left for dead in a field just after having a litter of puppies.

Abigail was retrieved by an animal control officer and was taken into their nearby facility. Once they assessed her condition, she was placed on a euthanasia list as they were overcapacity and did not have funds to give her all the medical care she needed. The facility then reached out to Animal Saints Rescue Society, asking for help.

Abigail arrived to our sanctuary exhausted, physically ill, suspicious of other dogs, and terrified of men. She had a life threatening uterine infection. Many of her teeth were fractured from chewing on a metal crate. Based on her condition, it appeared she had lived in one for years, if not her entire life.

Abigail has been in our sanctuary for two years now, recuperating from the severe abuse. She is now physically healthy, can play with other dogs, and enjoys meeting new people for the first time in her life. It’s taken many months, but she’s now to the point where she can enjoy life with a lightness of heart.

We share Saint Abigail’s story with you to stop puppy mills. How do we stop them? Through education and plan of action. We will soon share a feature article we have written about how to spot a puppy mill and why it matters.

On this 25th anniversary of 9/11, May we all remember the extraordinary Animal Saints who helped during this tragedy. This composition, taken by Navy photographer Jim Watson, has been burned on our brains. Riley was trained to find people alive in the rubble. When he was not successful, he was getting depressed. Because of his sadness, he was reassigned as a comfort dog to be there for the firefighters and police working in the rubble.

May Riley’s story remind us all that dogs are a profound gift to the world. We believe they are truly Saints, sent to this world to provide healing, love, and forgiveness to a depth found only in them.
