Dear Friends and Kier’s Kidz Family:

Kiersten always loved children. She connected with children because she approached life with the wonderment of a child. So, Kier was always in the groove with kids, and they knew it.

Kier’s connection with kids helped tremendously when she was in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment of her cancer. She knew what they were going through as an adult who remembered what it was like to be a child. Thus, she could help kids face their treatments with a knowing, loving adult who encouraged them and took joy in being with them, even as she was going through her own tough times.

Kier had such a zest for life, a child’s zest for life. She never gave up on living. She made the most of her time every moment she had the energy to do so. Amazingly, her heart kept beating for almost two hours after she took her last breath. Mimi and I laughed and cried during this time. We knew what she was up to.

Kier’s last wish was that the children and young adults who fought cancer after she died had what they needed to make it through treatment and had a better chance of survival. She created Kier’s Kidz to make that dream come true.

Great news.

Doctors told Lucas's family that his brain cancer had no known cure.

He was only six years old when he was diagnosed with DIPG, one of the most aggressive forms of childhood brain cancer. His family traveled from Belgium to France, where he joined an experimental clinical trial designed to test new approaches to the disease.

Then something extraordinary happened. Lucas's tumor responded to treatment, and after years of monitoring, doctors found no trace of it remaining. At age 13, he was described by his treating researchers as the first known child cured of DIPG.

His journey is a powerful reminder that medical breakthroughs often begin with one unexpected result. Lucas's case is now giving scientists new clues and new reasons to keep searching for answers for other children. ❤️

Dear Friends and Kier’s Kidz Family:

We want to thank the staff of the Outpatient Pediatric Oncology Unit for inviting us to their Carnival Event celebrating the first day of this year’s pediatric cancer month on 1 September.

Aneesha Panigrahi, President of the Rutgers Kier’s Kidz Club, and I had the opportunity to meet members of the social work, nursing, and physician staff; meet and play with children fighting cancer and their families; and see the new outpatient unit for the first time.

(The unit is part of the new Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center in New Brunswick. It is a modern center that serves children and adults with cancer and sickle-cell anemia and provides space for research into these diseases. It’s great! I thank Jack and Sheryl for their most generous gift to all of us.)

The kids are amazing. Many of them had chemo treatments that day. When they recovered enough to get out of bed safely, they made their way to the main lounge where they--and we—partook in games, eating pizza, cotton candy, other candy, and having their faces painted. The joy and the energy of these guys filled our hearts. Several parents and staff thanked us, including you, for donating food and gas gift cards and for donating funds directly to some of the families. Let me thank you from them, too. Without you, there is no Kier’s Kidz.

We also found new ways to help the children, especially the adolescents, by promising to have members of our Kier’s Kidz at Rutgers Club tutor students whose math and science needs were advanced. I hope to go over and read to the kids on occasion.

So, thanks for your help these past 13 years. I wish each of you could have been at the Carnival with us to see for yourself how you are helping. And thanks to Aneesha for being such a great leader of our Rutgers group.

Dear Friends and Kier’s Kidz Family:

September is Childhood Cancer Month.
With it comes the opportunity to rally our young cancer warriors who are still in the fight, congratulate those who have beaten cancer, and remember those children who have succumbed to this horrible disease. We also hold close in our hearts the parents, siblings, other family members, and friends of the children and young adults struck by this disease.

Today and every day this month and this year, Kier’s Kidz does so.

Kiersten fought cancer for almost four years. She lived a heroic life, despite the hell cancer put her through every day. She used her time to grow psychologically and emotionally, to help other kids fighting the cancer war, and to enjoy her friends and family whenever she had a chance. Her resilience and drive were amazing.

Then, when the doctors told her that there was nothing more they could do to help her fight cancer, Kier dreamed up and started Kier’s Kidz. She wanted Kier’s Kidz to give other kids and young adults a better chance of beating this horrid.

Dear Kier’s Kidz Family and Friends:

We are saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton, humanist, musician, singer, and lover of all humankind.

Dolly started life in the humblest of circumstances. Her family was quite poor financially. They lived day to day with few possessions and seemingly no way out. But love and understanding were so present in their lives that Dolly did the improbable. She used her talents, skills, and her family’s support to become one of the best-known and most cherished Americans.

From the beginning of her success as a singer/songwriter, Dolly shared her love and her understanding with all of us. And throughout her life, she made America’s children her children. Her Imagination Library Project has distributed one book per month for children from birth until five years old.

This week, I heard so many stories on TV about how this act of generosity helped so many kids learn to read, to write, and to get an education they likely would never have had without Dolly’s generosity and love. Her Library eventually extended to children throughout their childhood.

This project is one of the many, many projects that Dolly has offered.

So, it’s no wonder that all of America and much of the world are mourning the loss of Dolly Parton. Love and understanding connected Dolly to all of us.

Let us take her love and her example and rebuild America and the world.

Love lasts; all else fades away.
